Previous studies have investigated the association of gender roles with pain outcomes in healthy individuals. However, little is known about this association in those with musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders. Therefore, this mixed-methods systematic review aimed to investigate the association of sociocultural gender roles on pain outcomes in adults with MSK disorders. ⋯ There is a need for pain management to evolve to acknowledge the individual pain experience through exploration of an individual's gender identity and roles. PERSPECTIVE: This article demonstrates that gender roles have a multidimensional influence on the pain experience in those with MSK disorders. These findings support the development of gender-sensitive, patient-centered approaches to pain management, acknowledging each individual's important roles and identities.

Effects of Using Virtual Reality Technology on Pain and Hemodynamic Variables in Patients Receiving Hand Laceration Repair in an Emergency Department: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Pain and altered hemodynamic variables are among the most common complications in patients undergoing hand laceration repair in an Emergency Department. ⋯ Semi-immersive VR is effective in managing pain and hemodynamic variables during hand laceration repair. The nurses could use the semi-immersive VR to better control of pain and hemodynamic variables during hand laceration repair.

Acute pain management is a critical component of prehospital and emergency medical care. Opioids are effective; however, the risks and side-effects of opioids have led providers to use low-dose ketamine (LDK) for safe and effective treatment of acute pain. ⋯ LDK is a safe and effective option for acute pain treatment. It can be used as an alternative therapy to opioids or used in conjunction with them to reduce opioid exposure through its opioid-sparing effect. Importantly, LDK is available in a variety of formulations including intramuscular, intravenous, and intranasal, making it an effective acute pain treatment option in both the prehospital and ED settings. LDK holds promise as an emergency treatment in the evolving landscape of acute pain management.

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is genetically described as an autosomal blood disorder resulting from the presence of a mutated form of hemoglobin. Morbidity, frequency of crisis, degree of anemia, and organ systems involved vary considerably per patient. ⋯ In order to have successful dental outcomes and minimize posttreatment dental complications, relevant disease indicators are noted. This review is to raise awareness of the impact of oral diseases in patients with sickle cell disease and to emphasize the importance of full medical disclosure, radiographic interpretation, and a well-documented medical history, and a well-written consultation which can guide treatment planning and greatly improve the course of dental treatment.

High- versus low-dose ketamine for analgesia in older adults in the emergency department.
Ketamine is increasingly being utilized in the management of acute pain in the emergency department (ED), including for older adults, a population at increased risk of adverse effects from medications. We aimed to compare the safety and analgesic effects of high-dose (≥0.3mg/kg) to low-dose (<0.3mg/kg) intravenous (IV) ketamine among older ED patients. ⋯ High-dose and low-dose ketamine reduced pain scores in older adults. High-dose ketamine led to a greater reduction in pain scores, and there was no observed difference in adverse effects or the need for rescue analgesia. One-third needed discontinuation of ketamine in both groups.
