First aid cooling for burn injuries improves re-epithelialisation rates and reduces scarring. The objective of this research was to explore and describe barriers and facilitators to the provision of optimal first aid for acute burn patients in the prehospital setting. Emergency medical service (EMS) clinicians in Queensland were invited via email to participate in a survey designed to assess experience, knowledge, and attitudes regarding provision of optimal burn first aid in the prehospital setting (N = 4500). ⋯ The most common of these was identified as pain. Similarly, free text responses (n = 276) regarding facilitators of burn first aid formed eight dimensions with 21 subcategories - most commonly fast and effective pain relief. Factors influencing burn first aid provision in the prehospital setting were wide-ranging and varied, with pain identified as the most prominent.

To evaluate the impact of the tightened Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) prescribing rules for immediate release (IR) and controlled release (CR) opioid medicines (1 June 2020), which also eliminated repeat dispensing without authorisation for codeine/paracetamol and tramadol IR and introduced half-pack size item codes for IR formulations. ⋯ The introduction of new PBS rules for subsidised opioid medicines was followed by a decline in PBS-subsidised dispensing. Some people may have bypassed the new restrictions by switching to private prescriptions, but our findings suggest that opioid medicine use in Australia declined as a result of the new restrictions.

Inadequately managed postoperative pain remains a common issue. Examining factors like pain sensitivity, pain catastrophizing, and pain self-efficacy can help improve postoperative pain management. While these factors have been identified as potential predictors of acute postoperative pain, their effects have been inconsistent. Few studies have explored the interactions between these factors. ⋯ The severity of postoperative acute pain can be predicted by pain self-efficacy and pain catastrophizing, and the connection between moderate pain sensitivity and postoperative acute pain severity is mediated by them. Therefore, intervention programs aimed at boosting pain self-efficacy and reducing pain catastrophizing can enhance postoperative pain outcomes for abdominal surgery patients.

Spinal surgeries are accompanied by excessive pain due to extensive dissection and muscle retraction during the procedure. Thoracolumbar interfascial plane (TLIP) blocks for spinal surgeries are a recent addition to regional anesthesia to improve postoperative pain management. When performing a classical TLIP (cTLIP) block, anesthetics are injected between the muscle (m.) multifidus and m. longissimus. ⋯ The results of our systematic review include moderate-quality evidence that show TLIP blocks provide effective pain control after spinal surgery. Although, the application of mTLIP blocks is more successful, more studies are needed to confirm that superiority of mTLIP over cTLIP blocks. Additionally, further high-quality research is needed to verify the potential benefit of TLIP blocks as a common practice for spinal surgeries.
