Uterine fibroids, which are common benign tumors, rarely cause acute complications. We herein report a case of hemoperitoneum associated with uterine fibroid that could be diagnosed preoperatively with contrast-enhanced computerized tomography (CT). ⋯ CT could be useful to determine a diagnosis for bleeding from ruptured subserosal uterine fibroid.

To report the rationale, design, and baseline demographic characteristics of TuYou-County Pediatric Eye study, which mainly aimed to determine the retinal microvascular changes with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and its association with eye abnormalities in school aged children and adolescents at suburban location in Northern China. TuYou-County Pediatric Eye study was a school-based survey conducted in TuYou-County. Multi-ethnic (Mongol, Han, and Hui) participants will be followed up for 5 years. ⋯ The average age of all participants was 14.9 ± 5.11. TYPE study is the first large-scale school-based multi-ethnic survey in suburban site of Northern China. Continuous identification of retinal microvascular changes with eye diseases will provide new insights into the control related diseases in school-age children and adolescents.

The diagnostic and treatment values of double-balloon enteroscopy in children's Meckel's diverticular bleeding.
The diagnostic and treatment values and safety of preoperative double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) for Meckel's diverticula (MD) bleeding in children by retrospective review and analyses. The clinical data were collected and analyzed from 10 cases of children with MD receiving preoperative DBE examination and postoperative pathological confirmation. The diagnostic and treatment values and safety were assessed through the comparison of the DBE results and intra-operative observations and subsequently postoperative pathological results. ⋯ Surgery showed similar findings from 30 to 100 cm (average 71.0 ± 18.5) consistently to DBE. There is no statistical significance between 2 methods (Ζ = 1.715, Ρ = .086). DBE examination proves to be a safe method for diagnosing children's MD disease and can reliably determine the bleeding lesions in children's MD, providing valuable guidance for surgical treatment of children's MD bleeding.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is still a constant threat to people's health. We aimed to identify the relationship between increased red cell distribution width (RDW) on admission and length of hospitalization in acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients (AECOPD). Patients with AECOPD were recruited and divided into 3 groups based on RDW tertiles. ⋯ The highest sensitivity to predict prolonged hospital stay was 83.8% and the specificity was 71.6% with the cut-off 13.35%. In conclusion, prolonged hospital stay in AECOPD patients was closely associated with increased RDW. Elevated RDW may be an independent predictor for prolonged hospitalization in AECOPD patients.

Liberal blood transfusion strategies and associated infection in orthopedic patients: A meta-analysis.
It remains unclear whether transfusion strategies during orthopedic surgery and infection are related. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether liberal blood transfusion strategies contribute to infection risk in orthopedic patients by analyzing randomized controlled trials (RCTs). ⋯ This pooled analysis of RCTs demonstrates that liberal transfusion strategies in orthopedic patients result in a nonsignificant increase in infections compared with more restrictive strategies. The conclusions are mainly based on retrospective studies and should not be considered as recommendation before they are supported by larger scale and well-designed RCTs.
