General anesthesia for pediatric dermatologic procedures: risks and complications.
To assess the safety and adverse events associated with the use of general anesthesia in children undergoing elective dermatologic procedures. ⋯ The use of general anesthesia for dermatologic procedures in a children's hospital setting appears safe, with a low rate of complications.

Failed tracheal intubation in obstetrics: no more frequent but still managed badly.
In the South-West Thames region of the United Kingdom, during a 5-year period from 1999 to 2003, there were 20 failed tracheal intubations occurring in 4768 obstetric general anaesthetics (incidence 1 : 238). In half of the 16 cases for which the patient's notes could be examined there was a failure to follow an accepted protocol for failed tracheal intubation.

Lift-(gasless) laparoscopic surgery under regional anesthesia.
The objective of this Chapter was to investigate the feasibility and outcome of gasless laparoscopy under regional anesthesia. A prospective evaluation of Lift-(gasless) laparoscopic procedures under regional anesthesia (Canadian Task Force classification II-1) was done at three endoscopic gynecology centers (franchise system of EndGyn(r)). Sixty-three patients with gynecological diseases comprised the cohort. ⋯ All patients were operated without conversion to general anesthesia and without perioperative or anesthesiologic complications. Lift-laparoscopy under regional anesthesia can be recommended to all patients who desire laparoscopic intervention without general anesthesia. For elderly patients, those with cardiopulmonary risks, during pregnancy, or with contraindications for general anesthesia, Lift-laparoscopy under regional anesthesia should be the procedure of choice.

[Total intravenous anesthesia with propofol and remifentanil. Results of a multicenter study of 6,161 patients].
The aim of this study was to investigate efficacy and tolerability of propofol, remifentanil and cisatracurium or mivacurium in routine anesthetic practice. ⋯ The study showed that total intravenous anesthesia using propofol, remifentanil and cisatracurium or mivacurium is safe, tolerable and effective and has a high degree of acceptance.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical TrialPatient evaluation of a novel non-injectable anesthetic gel: a multicenter crossover study comparing the gel to infiltration anesthesia during scaling and root planing.
Periodontal scaling procedures commonly require some kind of anesthesia. From the patient's perspective, the choice of anesthetic method is a trade-off between the degree of anesthesia and accepting the side effects. The present study evaluates the preferences for a novel non-injection anesthetic product (a gel, containing lidocaine 25 mg/g plus prilocaine 25 mg/g and thermosetting agents) versus injection anesthesia (lidocaine 2% adrenaline) in conjunction with scaling and/or root planing (SRP). ⋯ The data suggest that a somewhat less profound anesthesia with gel is clearly preferred by the patients because of the low incidence of post-procedure problems as compared to conventional injection anesthesia. The median WTP is likely in excess of the acquisition cost of the product, which indicates a favorable cost-benefit ratio for the individual patient.
