Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Retracted Publication
Comparison between dexmedetomidine and remifentanil infusion in emergence agitation during recovery after nasal surgery : A randomized double-blind trial.
Postoperative emergency agitation (EA) is a common problem. Dexmedetomidine and remifentanil may be used to prevent this problem. Our primary aim was to compare dexmedetomidine, remifentanil, and placebo with respect to their effectiveness in preventing postoperative EA. ⋯ Anesthetic maintenance with either remifentanil or dexmedetomidine infusion until extubation provided a more smooth and hemodynamically stable emergence, without complications after nasal surgery. While remifentanil was superior to dexmedetomidine with regard to avoiding EA, dexmedetomidine was more effective than remifentanil regarding vomiting and pain.

Retracted PublicationThe impact of anesthesiologists on coronary artery bypass graft surgery outcomes.
One of every 150 hospitalized patients experiences a lethal adverse event; nearly half of these events involves surgical patients. Although variations in surgeon performance and quality have been reported in the literature, less is known about the influence of anesthesiologists on outcomes after major surgery. Our goal of this study was to determine whether there is significant variation in outcomes between anesthesiologists after controlling for patient case mix and hospital quality. ⋯ The rate of death or major complications among patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery varies markedly across anesthesiologists. These findings suggest that there may be opportunities to improve perioperative management to improve outcomes among high-risk surgical patients.

In 2009, Joachim Boldt published an article in Anesthesia & Analgesia comparing albumin and hydroxyethyl starch priming cardiopulmonary bypass. The study was retracted in December 2010 for lack of IRB approval. A subsequent investigation by Klinikum Ludwigshafen determined that the study was fabricated. ⋯ The effects of albumin versus hydroxyethyl starch solution on cardiorespiratory and circulatory variables in critically ill patient. Anesth Analg 1996;83: 254–61. Based on evidence of data manipulation reported by Justus-Liebig Universität Giessen to the journal, this paper is hereby retracted.
