Review Meta AnalysisMagnesium status and magnesium therapy in cardiac surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis focusing on arrhythmia prevention.
To investigate magnesium as prophylaxis or treatment of postoperative arrhythmias in cardiac surgery (CS) patients. To assess impact on biochemical and patient-centered outcomes. ⋯ Magnesium administration post-CS appears to reduce AF without significant adverse events. There is limited evidence to support magnesium administration for prevention of other arrhythmias.

Diaphragm and lung ultrasound to predict weaning outcome: systematic review and meta-analysis.
Deciding the optimal timing for extubation in patients who are mechanically ventilated can be challenging, and traditional weaning predictor tools are not very accurate. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the accuracy of lung and diaphragm ultrasound for predicting weaning outcomes in critically ill adults. ⋯ Lung and diaphragm ultrasound can help predict weaning outcome, but its accuracy may vary depending on the patient subpopulation.

Vitamin D deficiency in critically ill children: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) has been hypothesized not only to be common but also to represent a potentially modifiable risk factor for greater illness severity and clinical outcome during critical illness. The objective of this systematic review was to determine the frequency of VDD in pediatric critical illness and its association with clinical outcomes. ⋯ Approximately 50% of critically ill children have VDD at the time of PICU admission, defined as a blood total 25(OH)D concentration under 50 nmol/L. VDD was further determined to be associated with greater illness severity, multiple organ dysfunction, and mortality in the PICU setting. Clinical trials are required to determine if optimization of vitamin D status improves patient outcome.

Review Meta AnalysisAntifungal Prevention of Systemic Candidiasis in Immunocompetent ICU Adults: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Clinical Trials.
The aim of this study was to identify the impact of antifungal prevention in critically ill immunocompetent adult patients on mortality and subsequent infection. ⋯ Antifungal prevention of systemic candidiasis in immunocompetent critically ill adults did not reduce mortality and may have decreased secondary fungal infection rates. However, significant publication bias was present.

Review Meta AnalysisSystematic review and meta-analysis of renal replacement therapy modalities for acute kidney injury in the intensive care unit.
To compare clinical outcomes among critically ill adults with acute kidney injury (AKI) treated with continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) or sustained low efficiency dialysis (SLED). ⋯ We did not find a definitive advantage for any RRT modality on short-term patient or kidney survival. Well-designed, adequately-powered trials are needed to better define the role of RRT modalities for treatment of critically ill patients with AKI.
