Cancer Stage Compared With Mortality as End Points in Randomized Clinical Trials of Cancer Screening: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Randomized clinical trials of cancer screening typically use cancer-specific mortality as the primary end point. The incidence of stage III-IV cancer is a potential alternative end point that may accelerate completion of randomized clinical trials of cancer screening. ⋯ In randomized clinical trials of cancer screening, incidence of late-stage cancer may be a suitable alternative end point to cancer-specific mortality for some cancer types, but is not suitable for others. These results have implications for clinical trials of multicancer screening tests.

Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality for US women. Trials have established that screening mammography can reduce mortality risk, but optimal screening ages, intervals, and modalities for population screening guidelines remain unclear. ⋯ Evidence comparing the effectiveness of different breast cancer screening strategies is inconclusive because key studies have not yet been completed and few studies have reported the stage shift or mortality outcomes necessary to assess relative benefits.

Comment Practice Guideline
Screening for Breast Cancer: US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement.
Among all US women, breast cancer is the second most common cancer and the second most common cause of cancer death. In 2023, an estimated 43 170 women died of breast cancer. Non-Hispanic White women have the highest incidence of breast cancer and non-Hispanic Black women have the highest mortality rate. ⋯ The USPSTF recommends biennial screening mammography for women aged 40 to 74 years. (B recommendation) The USPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening mammography in women 75 years or older. (I statement) The USPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of supplemental screening for breast cancer using breast ultrasonography or MRI in women identified to have dense breasts on an otherwise negative screening mammogram. (I statement).

Meta AnalysisOutcomes of Prophylactic Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Insertion in Children Undergoing Cardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
The objective of this Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42022384192) registered systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine whether prophylactic peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter insertion at the time of pediatric cardiac surgery is associated with improved short-term outcomes. ⋯ In this meta-analysis, we have failed to demonstrate an association between prophylactic PD catheter insertion in children and infants undergoing cardiac surgery and reduced in-hospital mortality. Other relevant short-term outcomes, including markers of fluid overload, require further study.

Review Meta AnalysisFactors Affecting Mortality in Critically Ill Patients With Tuberculosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Critically ill patients with tuberculosis carry high mortality. Identification of factors associated with mortality in critically ill tuberculosis patients may enable focused treatment. ⋯ Patient age, platelet count, albumin and CRP levels, the requirement and duration of invasive mechanical ventilation, Pa o2 /F io2 ratio, hospital-acquired infections, renal replacement therapy, and ICU LOS were variables associated with mortality.
