Admission on weekends does not increase mortality after hip fracture: a meta-analysis of 1.4 million patients.
The "weekend" effect resulting in increased complication rates in patients admitted on weekends has been noted in many diseases. ⋯ This meta-analysis has shown no apparent weekend effect in cases of hip fractures. Patients admitted on weekends had similar mortality rates as compared to those admitted on weekdays. Current data has high heterogeneity and is mostly from developed countries.

Discharge of postoperative patients with an opioid prescription is associated with increased persistent opioid use, healthcare expenditures and mortality: a retrospective cohort study.
The risk factors for persistent opioid use after surgical discharge and the association between opioid prescription at discharge and postoperative emergency department visits, readmission, and mortality are unclear. ⋯ In this large cohort of patients undergoing surgery, an opioid prescription on discharge was associated with a higher chance of persistent opioid use and increased risks of postoperative emergency department visits, readmission, and mortality. Minimising opioid prescriptions on discharge could improve perioperative patient outcomes.

Upon the addition of the numbers corresponding to various cancer anatomical locations in the report published by Statistics South Africa (StatsSA), the absolute number and proportion of deaths due to all cancers increased from 36 726 (8.0%) in 2013 to 40 460 (8.5%) in 2015. These high figures suggest that malignant neoplasms were in fact the second-most frequent cause of death in South Africa (SA) in 2013, and moved to the first rank in 2015. ⋯ Cancer mortality rates have increased since 1997, regardless of gender. Overall, there was a decline in YPPLL for cancer in the young population, while it increased in the adult population. A significant reduction in cancer deaths could be achieved by broadly applying effective interventions.

The impact of chronic kidney disease and dialysis therapy on outcomes of elderly patients with hip fractures: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Hip fractures are a commonly occurring comorbidity in patients with chronic kidney disease. To evaluate the comparative rates of post-operative complications, revision surgery, and mortality after hip fracture surgery in chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis. ⋯ We report higher risks of post-operative complications, revision surgery, and mortality in chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis as compared to chronic kidney disease patients not undergoing hemodialysis.
