The authors examined the association of dietary calcium and magnesium intake with all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortality among 23,366 Swedish men, aged 45-79 years, who did not use dietary supplements. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the multivariate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals of mortality. ⋯ Dietary magnesium intake (means of tertiles ranged from 387 mg/day (SD, 31) to 523 mg/day (SD, 38) was not associated with all-cause, CVD, or cancer mortality. This population-based, prospective study of men with relatively high intakes of dietary calcium and magnesium showed that intake of calcium above that recommended daily may reduce all-cause mortality.

To evaluate the prevalence and 10-year outcomes of frailty in older adults in relation to deficit accumulation. ⋯ The prevalence of frailty increases with age and at any age lessens survival. The Frailty Index approach readily identifies frail people at risk of death, presumably because of its use of multiple health deficits in multidimensional domains.

Pelvic Fracture and Risk Factors for Mortality: A Population-Based Study in Taiwan.
To study the incidence, demographics, distribution of fracture sites, associated injuries, and risk factors for the outcomes of pelvic fracture on a population basis. ⋯ The incidence rate of pelvic fracture was higher in females over 44 years of age, but the average medical resource use was higher in males. Associated injuries were stronger positive factors for the risk of mortality than gender, fracture sites, injury mechanisms, and the characteristics of the treating hospitals.

Previous studies may have underestimated the contribution of health behaviors to social inequalities in mortality because health behaviors were assessed only at the baseline of the study. ⋯ In a civil service population in London, England, there was an association between socioeconomic position and mortality that was substantially accounted for by adjustment for health behaviors, particularly when the behaviors were assessed repeatedly.

High resting blood pressure (BP) is among the best studied and established risk factors for cardiovascular disease. However, little is known about the relationship between BP under acute stress, such as in acute chest pain, and subsequent mortality. ⋯ Among patients admitted to the ICU for chest pain, there is an inverse association between admission supine systolic BP and 1-year mortality rate.
