Regional cerebral perfusion was evaluated by single photon emission computed tomography (SPET) using technetium 99m hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (99mTc-HMPAO) as a tracer, in 13 control subjects and 44 age-matched patients suffering from dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT, n = 19), presumed Pick's disease (n = 5), idiopathic Parkinson's disease with dementia (DPD, n = 15) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP, n = 5). HMPAO uptake was measured in the superior frontal, inferior frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital cortices, and the perfusion values were expressed as cortical/cerebellar activity ratios. ⋯ In the DPD group, HMPAO uptake was significantly reduced in the parietal, temporal and occipital cortices, but not in the frontal cortex. These results show that DAT and DPD share an opposite anteroposterior HMPAO uptake defect as compared with the Pick's and PSP groups.

Senile dementia and Alzheimer's disease (often considered a single process) rank as the fourth most common cause of death in the United States and outrank in cost to the nation the three leading causes of death combined. Autopsy studies of patients with the clinical diagnosis of dementia have clearly shown that a wide variety of pathological conditions can produce clinically similar symptomatology. In order to address the many possible causes and treatments of these various forms of dementia, the Alzheimer's Association (formerly known as the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association), the Oklahoma Autopsy Assistance Network at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, and The Alzheimer's Foundation (also known as the Familial Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation) have begun a concerted effort to develop a regional network which can aid patients and their relatives in the diagnosis and management of dementia. Awareness of these organizations by all physicians will help in the development and dissemination of the newer and more specific treatments to patients (and their relatives) with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia in Oklahoma.

A stratified random sample of 1000 elderly Chinese was drawn from the electoral register of three constituencies, namely Tiong Bahru, Henderson and Bukit Merah. It was only possible to interview 612 subjects. The questionnaire included social resources, activities of daily living, mental health and physical health. ⋯ Most subjects were in good mental health (92.2%). The prevalence of dementia was 1.8% and depressive disorder 4.6%. Senile dementia was more prevalent in the old-old (2.8%) than the young-old (0.5%).
