Predictive value of S-100β protein for prognosis in patients with moderate and severe traumatic brain injury: systematic review and meta-analysis.
To determine the ability and accuracy of the S-100β protein in predicting prognosis after a moderate or severe traumatic brain injury. ⋯ After moderate or severe traumatic brain injury, serum S-100β protein concentrations are significantly associated with unfavourable prognosis in the short, mid, or long term. Optimal thresholds for discrimination remain unclear. Measuring the S-100β protein could be useful in evaluating the severity of traumatic brain injury and in the determination of long term prognosis in patients with moderate and severe injury.

The value of scheduled repeat cranial computed tomography after mild head injury: single-center series and meta-analysis.
After an initial computed tomography (CT) scan revealing intracranial hemorrhage resulting from traumatic brain injury, a standard of care in many trauma centers is to schedule a repeat CT scan to rule out possible progression of bleed. ⋯ The available evidence indicates that it is unnecessary to schedule a repeat CT scan after mild head injury when patients are unchanged or improving neurologically. In the absence of supporting data, we question the value of routine follow-up imaging given the associated accumulative increase in cost and risks.

Prevalence of traumatic brain injury in the general adult population: a meta-analysis.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant public-health concern. To understand the extent of TBI, it is important to assess the prevalence of TBI in the general population. However, the prevalence of TBI in the general population can be difficult to measure because of differing definitions of TBI, differing TBI severity levels, and underreporting of sport-related TBI. ⋯ Across 15 studies, all originating from developed countries, which included 25,134 adults, 12% had a history of TBI. Men had more than twice the odds of having had a TBI than did women, suggesting that male gender is a risk factor for TBI. The adverse behavioral, cognitive and psychiatric effects associated with TBI coupled with the high prevalence of TBI identified in this study indicate that TBI is a considerable public and personal-health problem.

Nutritional support for patients sustaining traumatic brain injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.
In traumatic brain injury (TBI), the appropriate timing and route of feeding, and the efficacy of immune-enhancing formulae have not been well established. We performed this meta-analysis aiming to compare the effects of different nutritional support modalities on clinical outcomes of TBI patients. ⋯ After TBI, early initiation of nutrition is recommended. It appears that parenteral nutrition is superior to enteral nutrition in improving outcomes. Our results lend support to the use of small-bowel feeding and immune-enhancing formulae in reducing infectious complications.

Review Meta AnalysisMeta-analysis of Glasgow coma scale and simplified motor score in predicting traumatic brain injury outcomes.
To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the simplified motor score (SMS) and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) in predicting outcomes in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). ⋯ In patients with TBI, SMS predicts different outcomes with similar accuracy as GCS except mortality. However, due to heterogeneity and limited numbers of studies, further prospective studies are required.
