Comparative StudyDelivery room management of extremely low birth weight infants in Italy: comparison between academic and non-academic birth centres.
International Guidelines provide a standardised approach to newborn resuscitation in the DR and, in their most recent versions, recommendations dedicated to management of ELBWI were progressively increased. It is expected that introduction in clinical practice and dissemination of the most recent evidence should be more consistent in academic than in non-academic hospitals. The aim of the study was to compare adherence to the International Guidelines and consistency of practice in delivery room management of extremely low birth weight infants between academic and non-academic institutions. ⋯ There were minor differences in management of extremely low birth weight infants between Italian academic and non-academic institutions, apart from thermal management. Although there was a good, overall adherence to the International Guidelines for Neonatal Resuscitation, temperature management was not in accordance with official recommendations and every effort has to be done to improve this aspect.

Clinical TrialRole of presepsin in the diagnosis of late-onset neonatal sepsis in preterm infants.
One of the most challenging aspects in the management of neonates with late-onset neonatal sepsis (LOS) is to make the diagnosis. Presepsin is a novel and promising marker of sepsis. The aim of this study was to assess the role of presepsin in the diagnosis of LOS in preterm infants. ⋯ Presepsin can be used as a reliable biomarker for LOS and treatment response in preterm infants. However, we could not demonstrate the efficacy of presepsin for the detection of disease severity or prognosis.

Umbilical cord blood concentrations of ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in neonates developing hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
To compare ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) concentrations in umbilical cord blood of neonates who develop Sarnat stage II-III hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) to healthy controls, and to relate the concentrations to the severity of neurology and long-time outcomes. ⋯ No differences in cord blood UCH-L1 and GFAP concentrations were found between HIE neonates and controls, and no associations were found between the biomarker concentrations and the severity of disease, or whether the condition developed into a permanent or fatal injury.

Randomized Controlled TrialCombination of motherwort injection and oxytocin for the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage after cesarean section.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of motherwort injection combined with oxytocin for preventing postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) after cesarean section (CS). ⋯ It is efficacious and safe that combination use of motherwort injection and oxytocin could reduce blood loss and prevent PPH after CS.

Oxygen administration at birth in preterm infants: a retrospective analysis.
The aim of the study was to retrospectively investigate the association between initial oxygen concentration in delivery room and short-term outcomes in preterm infants. ⋯ Initial oxygen concentration seems to be associated with increased MV in the NICU. Our observations further stress the need for randomized controlled studies in order to obtain definitive recommendations for the optimal initial oxygen concentration during neonatal resuscitation of preterm infants.
