Multicenter Study Comparative StudyNoninvasive ventilation in critically ill patients with the Middle East respiratory syndrome.
Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has been used in patients with the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, but the effectiveness of this approach has not been studied. ⋯ In patients with MERS and acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, NIV failure was very high. The use of NIV was not associated with improved outcomes.

Multicenter StudyRisk factors and effectiveness of preventive measures against influenza in the community.
The role of different risk exposures and preventive measures against influenza has not been well established. ⋯ The home environment appears to play an important role in the spread of influenza in adults, but not the use of public transport. Health care workers have a higher risk of contracting influenza. Vaccination was the most effective preventive measure.

Multicenter StudySafety and immunogenicity of an inactivated thimerosal-free influenza vaccine in infants and children.
Few prospective studies of inactivated split virion influenza vaccine have been conducted in infants and children. Our objective was to evaluate the safety, reactogenicity and immunogenicity of a thimerosal-free inactivated influenza vaccine (Fluvax; CSL Limited, Parkville, Australia) in children aged 6 months to <9 years. ⋯ This thimerosal-free inactivated influenza vaccine had a favorable safety profile and was immunogenic in children aged > or =6 months and <9 years. Primary and booster vaccination produced consistently immunogenic responses including in children under 3 years of age receiving 0.25 ml doses of vaccine.
