Classification of follicular lymphoma images: a holistic approach with symbol-based machine learning methods.
It is not very often to see a symbol-based machine learning approach to be used for the purpose of image classification and recognition. In this paper we will present such an approach, which we first used on the follicular lymphoma images. Lymphoma is a broad term encompassing a variety of cancers of the lymphatic system. ⋯ Symbolic machine learning approaches are often neglected when looking for image analysis tools. They are not only known for a very appropriate knowledge representation, but also claimed to lack computational power. The results we got are very promising and show that symbolic approaches can be successful in image analysis applications.

ReviewApplication of the comet assay method in clinical studies.
The comet assay or single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) assay is now widely accepted as a standard method for assessing DNA damage in individual cells. It finds use in a broad variety of applications including human biomonitoring, genotoxicology, ecological monitoring and as a tool for investigation of DNA damage and repair in different cell types in response to a range of DNA-damaging agents. The comet assay should be eminently suitable for use in clinical practice since it is a relatively simple and inexpensive technique which requires only a few cells, and results can be obtained within a matter of hours. ⋯ Another use of this method is in lifestyle study, such as investigation of the effect on DNA of common human activities (e.g. smoking, or working with a potentially genotoxic agent). The final use of comet assay in this paper is dietary study. In this type of study we observe the effects of consumption of specific foods or supplements which may be protective for DNA against damage.

Endothelin-1 levels in patients with chronic congestive heart failure were evaluated with respect to the severity of cardiac dysfunction. The relationships between three neurohormones, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), human atrial natriuretic peptide (HANP), and endothelin-1,were evaluated. ⋯ These findings indicate that endothelin-1 interacts with HANP and BNP in patients with chronic congestive heart failure. Endothelin-1 is suggested to play an important role in chronic congestive heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.
