Randomized Controlled TrialReusable respirators as personal protective equipment in clinical practice : User experience in times of a pandemic.
The novel strain of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is highly contagious; therefore, special emphasis must be given to personal protective equipment for healthcare workers. Reusable elastomeric respirators were previously used in intensive care units (ICU). These respirators include full or half masks and devices modified to accommodate a filter. Although the general comfort of masks used in the ICU has been studied, data comparing multiple types of masks during a pandemic are missing. ⋯ Using reusable elastomeric masks is feasible in clinical practice. Full face masks were significantly better in terms of comfort, donning, overall rating and in comparison to single-use FFP2/3 masks.

Temporal patterns of weekly births and conceptions predicted by meteorology, seasonal variation, and lunar phases.
Data reporting the number of births given by women resident in Vienna for each week between 1999 and 2019, and the duration (in weeks) of their pregnancies, were used to estimate the week of conception. When preliminary examinations detected cyclical patterns for births and conceptions, a series of Poisson regressions for births and conceptions were performed to assess whether these cycles could be associated with lunar or solar phases. ⋯ The latter results should be treated with caution, as they are not hypothesis driven. Furthermore, literature reports on this topic are conflicting. Nevertheless, these findings will be useful in further analyses examining air pollution effects.

2022 update of the Austrian Society of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation nutrition and lifestyle recommendations for patients with gout and hyperuricemia.
Gout is the most frequent inflammatory joint disease in the western world and has a proven genetic background. Additionally, lifestyle factors like increasing life span and wealth, sufficient to excess nutritional status and a growing prevalence of obesity in the population, as well as e.g. alcohol consumption contribute to the rising incidence of hyperuricemia and gout. Apart from an adequate medication, medical advice on nutrition and lifestyle is an essential part of the management of gout patients, being at high risk of internal comorbidities. ⋯ The Austrian nutrition and lifestyle recommendations for patients with gout and hyperuricemia were updated incorporating the most recent relevant literature, serving as education material for patients and updated information for physicians.

ReviewUpdate of the mechanism and characteristics of tuberculosis in chronic kidney disease : Review article.
The risk of tuberculosis (TB) is significantly increased in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is closely related to hyperparathyroidism, malnutrition and oxidative stress as well as immune deficiency in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Vitamin D deficiency and gender bias are independent risk factors. In the TB screening and diagnosis test of CKD, interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA), including T‑SPOT. ⋯ For CKD patients with TB, the choice and dosage of anti-TB drugs need to be reconsidered. Weekly treatment with rifapentin (RFT) and isoniazid (INH) for 3 months is an effective treatment for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Therefore, in this review we discuss CKD and TB, its pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment advancements.

The association between wood dust exposure and respiratory disorders and oxidative stress among furniture workers.
This study was undertaken to determine the effect of wood dust on the respiratory system and oxidative stress in furniture workers and to determine whether any associations exist between respiratory parameters and oxidative stress. ⋯ The present study results indicated that exposure to wood dust significantly increased respiratory disorders and confirmed the association between lung function parameters and oxidative stress.
