Clinical TrialPatient satisfaction after breast cancer surgery : A prospective clinical trial.
This study investigated the impact of curative breast cancer surgery on patient satisfaction concerning cosmetic results and quality of life (QoL). ⋯ Patient satisfaction was lowest immediately after surgery but improved during the following months, despite continued breast asymmetry. For mastectomy patients, a lower resected volume led to a higher satisfaction with cosmetic results. Satisfaction is subjective and cannot be determined from the esthetic satisfaction of the surgeon or using an objective tool measuring breast asymmetry.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyPsychometric properties of the Activities Ccale for Kids-performance after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in adolescents and children : Results of a prospective study on behalf of the German-Austrian-Swiss GVHD Consortium.
The psychometric properties of an instrument, the Activity Scale for Kids-performance (ASKp), were assessed which was proposed to capture physical functioning after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Additionally, this multicenter observational prospective study investigated the influence of clinical correlates focusing on chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). ⋯ The ASKp showed no clear advantages compared to KPS/PSS even though economical and patients' effort was higher. Further application range may be limited through ceiling effects. Both should be taken into consideration. Therefore, the results may not support the usage of ASKp after HSCT and rather suggest KPS/PSS, both patient and clinician reported.

Serum procalcitonin in Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms.
Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), essential thrombocythemia (ET), polycythemia vera (PV), and myelofibrosis (MF), are rare clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorders accompanied by a strong inflammatory milieu, which is directly responsible for constitutional symptoms associated with the disease, such as fever, weight loss or night sweats. Non-hematologists sometimes (and often wrongly) consider the fever in MPN patients to be a symptom of an underlying disease, which may have devastating consequences. Serum procalcitonin (PCT) is a circulating biomarker commonly used to improve the diagnostic accuracy of bacterial infections and to guide antibiotic therapy. ⋯ Median PCT in MPN patients was 0.02 ng/mL (range 0.01-0.09 ng/mL). No difference in PCT was found between ET, PV and MF patients (p = 0.993), whereas MPN patients with documented bacterial infections had significantly higher PCT (median PCT 2.45, range 0.90-5.40 ng/mL) when compared to MPN patients with (median PCT 0.03 ng/mL) or without constitutional symptoms (median PCT 0.02 ng/mL; p < 0.001 for both analyses). These results clearly show that PCT should not be considered as a disease biomarker in MPNs and careful clinical assessment for the signs of infection is needed when MPN patients present with fever and high PCT.

HS-173, a selective PI3K inhibitor, induces cell death in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cell lines.
The selective PI3K (Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase) inhibitor HS-173 has anticancer activity in non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic cancer cells. Of all head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) 20% harbor specific mutations in the genome. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of HS-173 on HNSCC cell lines. ⋯ The selective PI3K inhibitor HS-173 is a potent chemosensitizing and also radiosensitizing drug in treatment of HNSCC cell lines and could be an effective treatment in PI3K-mutated HNSCC.
