Sex and gender matters : A sex-specific analysis of original articles published in the Wiener klinische Wochenschrift between 2013 and 2015.
The variables sex and gender are significantly related to health and disease of women and men. Aiming at quality research, biomedical publications need to account for the key variables sex and gender. ⋯ In the time span studied most of the selected articles of this journal did not account for the variables sex and/or gender systematically or adequately. For future research the existing guidelines can help authors and editors to overcome gender bias due to inadequate methods. Applying sex and gender-sensitive methods to biomedical and health research is necessary for high quality and as a precondition for results which are generalizable and applicable to both women and men.

Anti-HCV treatment with ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir ± dasabuvir is associated with increased bile acid levels and pruritus.
Direct acting antiviral (DAA)-based treatment with ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir ± dasabuvir (OBV/PTV/r ± DSV) is highly effective in HCV genotype 1 or 4 infection and well-tolerated with only few side effects. However, pruritus has been observed in several trials in up to 20% of patients and seems to be unique for this DAA combination. ⋯ Pruritus observed during OBV/PTV/r ± DSV treatment of chronic hepatitis C is associated with increased on-treatment serum bile acid levels, possibly due to ritonavir-induced alterations of bile acid transport.

Non-invasive ventilation for acute hypercapnic respiratory failure in older patients.
This trial was conducted to carry out an age and etiology-based analysis of the clinical efficacy of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in acute hypercapnic respiratory failure (AHRF). ⋯ The efficacy of NIV was independent of age in patients aged ≥65 years with AHRF and NIV was most successful when the etiology of AHRF was COPD or ACPE. Dyspnea level, GCS, and APACHE-ΙΙ scores were independent predictors of NIV failure in COPD.

Efficacy of a multidisciplinary pulmonary rehabilitation outpatient program on exacerbations in overweight and obese patients with asthma.
Even though many studies have investigated the effectiveness of weight loss interventions, the efficacy of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) has not yet been proven in obese patients with asthma. The aims of this study were to investigate the efficacy of PR on asthma exacerbations in the first year after PR and to evaluate the efficacy of PR in exercise capacity, quality of life, psychosocial symptoms and control of asthma in overweight patients. ⋯ This study showed that comprehensive multidisciplinary PR was associated with a decreased number of emergency admissions and hospitalizations for asthma exacerbations in 1 year, and improvements of dyspnea sensation, quality of life, exercise capacity, and psychosocial status in overweight and obese patients.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyListening to music during shock wave lithotripsy decreases anxiety, pain, and dissatisfaction : A randomized controlled study.
We analyzed the effects of music on pain, anxiety, and overall satisfaction in patients undergoing a shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) procedure. ⋯ Music can be an ideal adjunctive treatment modality for patients undergoing SWL treatment. It has the potential to enhance patient compliance and treatment satisfaction by reducing the procedure-related anxiety and pain perception.
