Review Meta Analysis
A literature review of a meta-analysis of BRAF mutations in non-small cell lung cancer.
The research on the relationship between the Braf Proto-oncogene (BRAF) mutation and lung cancer has generated conflicting findings. Nevertheless, there is an argument suggesting that assessing the BRAF status could offer benefits in terms of managing and prognosing individuals with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). To present a comprehensive overview of this subject, we undertook an up-to-date meta-analysis of pertinent publications. ⋯ Our meta-analysis revealed a significant correlation between BRAF mutations and NSCLC. Moreover, we observed a higher incidence of BRAF lung mutations in females compared to males. Additionally, the BRAFV600E mutation was found to be more prevalent among female patients and nonsmokers.

To systematically evaluate the correlation between serum osteocalcin levels and cognitive function status in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) patients. ⋯ Based on a meta-analysis of included studies, we concluded that there is a moderately strong positive correlation between serum osteocalcin levels and patients' cognitive function in T2D. An intervention to increase serum osteocalcin levels can contribute to delaying and improving cognitive decline in patients with T2D.

Review Case Reports
Squamous cell carcinoma of the cystic duct: A case report and literature review.
Pure squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the gallbladder is a rare malignant biliary tract tumor predominantly found in the body and neck of the gallbladder. However, its occurrence in the cystic duct is even rarer. Given its rarity, no established guidelines or consensus currently exist regarding the treatment of pure SCC of the gallbladder. We report an unusual case of SCC originating from the cystic duct with the intent of providing insights into the therapeutic approach for this type of malignancy. ⋯ The diagnosis and therapeutic strategy for rare tumors such as gallbladder SCC should be meticulously tailored based on their unique characteristics to optimize postoperative patient outcomes.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of several chronic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and periodontitis (PD). RA patients with periodontitis (RA-PD) are associated with elevated inflammatory burden due to increased production of proinflammatory cytokines. Controlling upregulated MMPs activity in these patients may have potential therapeutic effects. Therefore, aim of this study is to address the focused question: "Do RA subjects with concurrent PD have different levels of MMPs in comparison to RA alone, PD alone and HC subjects?" ⋯ RA-PD group showed significantly higher MMP levels in their serum and GCF compared with HC, RA, and PD alone individuals. MMP-8 may serve as a reliable biomarker in the diagnosis and management of RA-PD subjects.

The objectives of the researchers are as follows: First, to investigate whether intraoperative or postoperative administration of Intravenous (IV) iron supplements in patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) can contribute to the hemoglobin recovery during the postoperative period (between 4 and 8 weeks after surgery). Second, to examine whether the administration of IV iron supplements during or immediately after TKA in patients undergoing primary TKA can reduce the need for allogenic blood transfusion during hospitalization. ⋯ The administration of IV iron supplements during or after TKA surgery increases hemoglobin recovery between 4 and 8 weeks after surgery and reduces the need for allogeneic blood transfusion during hospitalization.
