Disturbance of the daily cycles in sleep and wakefulness induced by conditions such as shift work and jet lag can increase the risk of affective disorders including anxiety and depression. The way such circadian disorganization disrupts the regulation of mood, however, is not well understood. More specifically, the impact of circadian disorganization on the daily rhythms of the neuronal function that controls mood remains unclear. ⋯ To introduce circadian disorganization of behaviors, we exposed male C57BL/6J mice to chronic reversal of the light-dark cycle and we found a marked negative mood phenotype in these mice. Importantly, the most adverse effect of circadian disorganization on expression rhythms of clock and IEGs was observed in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) when compared to that in other mood-related areas of the brain. Dysregulation of molecular rhythms in the PFC is therefore suggested to be associated with the development of mood disorders in conditions including shift work and jet lag.

Electric current has been used for epilepsy treatment by targeting specific neural circuitries. Despite its success, direct contact between the electrode and tissue could cause side effects including pain, inflammation, and adverse biological reactions. Magnetic stimulation overcomes these limitations by offering advantages over biocompatibility and operational feasibility. ⋯ The inhibition effect was dependent on the frequency and duration of the magnetic stimulus, with high frequency being more effective in suppressing EFA. EFA suppression by the magnetic field was also observed in the 4-AP model, in a frequency and duration - dependent manner. The study provides a platform for further investigation of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying epilepsy treatment with time varying magnetic fields.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is classically characterized by two major markers: extracellular development of senile plaques and intracellular formation of neurofibrillary tangles. Nonetheless, neuronal glucose hypometabolism and Ca2+ deregulation have been separately implied in the genesis and progress of the neurodegenerative process. In this sense, the goal of this study was to investigate if modifications in the glucose transport would influence the cellular viability and would be involved with the activity of Ca2+ removal from the neuron. ⋯ It was observed that the reduction of glucose transport directed the neuron to decrease the removal and increase of intracellular Ca2+ at rest. Therefore, we concluded that reduced glucose transport impairs neuronal viability and compromise the activity of Ca2+ removal from the neuron. Thus, it is expected that changes in glucose transport may lead to a more susceptible condition or trigger a neurodegenerative condition resulting in accumulation of intracellular Ca2+.

Apart from reproduction, estrogen influences a multitude of processes. Increase in estrogen levels in women is known to promote reward probably mediated via the melanocortin and dopamine systems. Reduced estrogen in post-menopausal women attenuates reward, evoking the need for stimulation with greater rewarding salience. ⋯ Prior treatment with sub-effective doses of α-MSH or NDP-MSH potentiated the reward effect of nicotine, but was attenuated by HS014. Alpha-MSH-immunoreactivity was decreased in the Acb shell, arcuate and paraventricular nucleus of hypothalamus, and ventral bed nucleus of stria terminalis in the OVX rats, while nicotine treatment restored the same. We suggest a role for the endogenous MC system, perhaps acting via MC4-R, in the nicotine-induced reward in OVX rats.

We address the hypothesis that the entropy of neural dynamics indexes the intensity and quality of conscious content. Previous work established that serotonergic psychedelics can have a dysregulating effect on brain activity, leading to subjective effects that present a considerable overlap with the phenomenology of certain meditative states. Here we propose that the prolonged practice of meditation results in endogenous increased entropy of brain oscillatory activity. ⋯ Finally, machine learning classifiers could successfully generalize between certain pairs of meditation traditions based on the scalp distribution of gamma band entropies. Our results extend previous findings on the spectral changes observed during meditation, showing how long-term practice can lead to the capacity for achieving brain states of high entropy. This constitutes an example of an endogenous, self-induced high entropy state.
