We examined the sensory innervation of the coccygeal (Co) 5/6 intervertebral disc in rats using a retrograde neurotracing method and immunohistochemistry. ⋯ This study showed evidence for nerve fibers in the discs and predominant innervation by CGRP-IR DRG neurons. The neurons innervating the discs mostly derived from S1 to S3 DRGs, especially S2 and S3. These findings may be useful in developing rat models of disease involving degenerative intervertebral disc compression.

A biomechanical testing protocol was used to evaluate atlantoaxial fixation techniques in a human cadaveric model. ⋯ The biomechanical study indicated that, contrary to expectation, addition of a cage did not increase the stability compared with C1-C2 pedicle screw alone. However, the C1 + C2 + Cage technique may be a viable alternative for atlantoaxial stabilization when the posterior arch of the atlas is absent or removed for decompression and a Gallie fixation is impossible.

Cochrane systematic review. ⋯ There is very low quality evidence in favor of using braces, making generalization very difficult. Further research could change the actual results and our confidence in them; in the meantime, patients' choices should be informed by multidisciplinary discussion. Future research should focus on short- and long-term patient-centered outcomes, in addition to measures such as Cobb angles. RCTs and prospective cohort studies should follow both the Scoliosis Research Society and Society on Scoliosis Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Treatment criteria for bracing studies.
