A cross-sectional imaging study of young adults. ⋯ Low back symptoms and functional limitations over a 3-year period were not associated with increased fat content or a reduction in the cross-sectional area of lumbar paraspinal muscles among young adults.

Retrospective chart review. ⋯ This study suggests that plain radiographs should be performed as indicated clinically rather than routinely after instrumented lumbar fusion. The vast majority of asymptomatic patients do not require routine postoperative radiographs.

Retrospective cohort study. ⋯ Despite demonstrating an accelerated rate of L5-S1 disc degeneration, our study group has good functional scores and maintenance of correction over 10 years postfusion. In this long-term MR imaging follow-up study, disc degeneration was found remote to the lowest instrumented vertebra.

Cross-sectional mail questionnaire. ⋯ With one exception, SRS-24, SRS-23, and SRS-22 questionnaire, nonmanagement domains, and individual domain total scores and mean scores can be translated to SRS-22r scores with fair to excellent accuracy, which is further improved in some instances by minimal domain reconfigurations. The sole exception is SRS-24 self-image, which translates poorly.
