Randomized Controlled TrialImpact of the route of nutrition on gut mucosa in ventilated adults with shock: an ancillary of the NUTRIREA-2 trial.
The effects of the route of nutrition on the gut mucosa of patients with shock are unclear. Plasma citrulline concentration is a marker of enterocyte mass, and plasma intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) concentration is a marker of enterocyte damage. We aimed to study the effect of the route of nutrition on plasma citrulline concentration measured at day 3 of nutrition. ⋯ Plasma citrulline concentration was higher after 3 days of enteral nutrition than after 3 days of parenteral nutrition. This result raises the question of the possibility that enteral nutrition is associated with a more rapid restoration of enterocyte mass than parenteral nutrition.

Review Meta AnalysisChanges in critically ill cancer patients' short-term outcome over the last decades: results of systematic review with meta-analysis on individual data.
The number of averted deaths due to therapeutic advances in oncology and hematology is substantial and increasing. Survival of critically ill cancer patients has also improved during the last 2 decades. However, these data stem predominantly from unadjusted analyses. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of ICU admission year on short-term survival of critically ill cancer patients, with special attention on those with neutropenia. ⋯ After adjustment for patient characteristics, severity of illness and clustering, hospital mortality decreased steadily over time in critically ill oncology and hematology patients except for allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients.

ReviewNew-onset atrial fibrillation in adult critically ill patients: a scoping review.
New-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) is common and associated with increased morbidity and mortality. However, its clinical importance and management in critically ill patients are not well described. The aim of this scoping review is to assess the epidemiology and management strategies of NOAF during critical illness. ⋯ The definition and incidence of NOAF in critically ill patients varied considerably and many risk factors were identified. NOAF seemed to be associated with adverse outcomes, but data were very limited and current management strategies are not evidence-based.

Statement paper on diversity for the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM).
Diversity has become a key-strategic element of success in various political and economic fields. The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) decided to make diversity a key strategic priority for the future and appointed a Task-Force on this topic. ⋯ The diversity Task-Force defined actionable items for a one- and three-year plan that are especially aiming at the identification of potential gaps and an implementation of concrete projects for members of the ESICM.

Influenza vaccination and 1-year risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, pneumonia, and mortality among intensive care unit survivors aged 65 years or older: a nationwide population-based cohort study.
We examined whether influenza vaccination affects 1-year risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, pneumonia, and death among intensive care unit (ICU) survivors aged ≥ 65 years. ⋯ Compared with the unvaccinated ICU survivors, the influenza vaccinated ICU survivors had a lower 1-year risk of stroke and a lower 1-year risk of death, whereas no substantial association was observed for the risk of hospitalization for myocardial infarction, heart failure, or pneumonia. Our findings support influenza vaccination of individuals aged ≥ 65 years.
