Review Meta AnalysisChanges in critically ill cancer patients' short-term outcome over the last decades: results of systematic review with meta-analysis on individual data.
The number of averted deaths due to therapeutic advances in oncology and hematology is substantial and increasing. Survival of critically ill cancer patients has also improved during the last 2 decades. However, these data stem predominantly from unadjusted analyses. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of ICU admission year on short-term survival of critically ill cancer patients, with special attention on those with neutropenia. ⋯ After adjustment for patient characteristics, severity of illness and clustering, hospital mortality decreased steadily over time in critically ill oncology and hematology patients except for allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients.

ReviewNew-onset atrial fibrillation in adult critically ill patients: a scoping review.
New-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) is common and associated with increased morbidity and mortality. However, its clinical importance and management in critically ill patients are not well described. The aim of this scoping review is to assess the epidemiology and management strategies of NOAF during critical illness. ⋯ The definition and incidence of NOAF in critically ill patients varied considerably and many risk factors were identified. NOAF seemed to be associated with adverse outcomes, but data were very limited and current management strategies are not evidence-based.

ReviewBrain ultrasonography: methodology, basic and advanced principles and clinical applications. A narrative review.
Brain ultrasonography can be used to evaluate cerebral anatomy and pathology, as well as cerebral circulation through analysis of blood flow velocities. Transcranial colour-coded duplex sonography is a generally safe, repeatable, non-invasive, bedside technique that has a strong potential in neurocritical care patients in many clinical scenarios, including traumatic brain injury, aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage, hydrocephalus, and the diagnosis of cerebral circulatory arrest. ⋯ Its increasing use reflects a growing interest in non-invasive cerebral and systemic assessment. The aim of this manuscript is to provide an overview of the basic and advanced principles underlying brain ultrasonography, and to review the different techniques and different clinical applications of this approach in the monitoring and treatment of critically ill patients.
