Multicenter StudyThe Outcomes of Switching from Short- to Long-Term Intravitreal Corticosteroid Implant Therapy in Patients with Diabetic Macular Edema.
First-line treatment for diabetic macular edema (DME) is usually with antivascular endothelial growth factor agents, followed by intravitreal corticosteroids as a second-line treatment option. Long-term corticosteroids may offer quality of life and effectiveness benefits over short-term implants. ⋯ The FAc intravitreal implant is effective in patients previously treated with short-term corticosteroid implants. Thus, after a suboptimal response to antiangiogenics or a short-term corticosteroid, a single FAc implant may be considered an effective and tolerable treatment that can improve long-term outcomes for patients with sight-threatening DME.

Exendin-4 Protects Human Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells from H2O2-Induced Oxidative Damage via Activation of NRF2 Signaling.
Oxidative damage plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Exendin-4 (EX4), a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, possesses several pharmacological functions, such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. However, the effects and mechanism of EX4 on oxidative stress in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) remain unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the protective mechanism of EX4 on human RPE cells subjected to oxidative stress. ⋯ EX4 attenuated oxidative damage induced by H2O2 in ARPE-19 cells through the activation of the NRF2 signaling pathway. The findings suggested that EX4 may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of AMD.

Associations between Blood Cell Profiles and Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma: A Retrospective Case-Control Study.
We aimed to evaluate whether the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and systemic immune inflammation index (SII) were associated with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). ⋯ We speculated that elevated NLR and SII might serve as readily available inflammatory predictors in POAG patients.

Comparative StudyFluocinolone Acetonide Intravitreal Implant 190 μg (ILUVIEN®) in Vitrectomized versus Nonvitrectomized Eyes for the Treatment of Chronic Diabetic Macular Edema.
To compare the functional and anatomical outcomes after a 0.2 µg/day fluocinolone acetonide (FAc) implant between vitrectomized and nonvitrectomized eyes with chronic diabetic macular edema (DME). ⋯ The results from the real-life practice study demonstrate that the 0.2 μg/day FAc implant is effective and well tolerated in vitrectomized and nonvitrectomized eyes of patients with chronic DME. Our results support the use of a 0.2 μg/day FAc implant to obtain long-term functional and anatomical improvements (mean, 8.5 months; median, 6.0 months) in vitrectomized and nonvitrectomized eyes.

Evaluation of the Macular Ganglion Cell-Inner Plexiform Layer and the Circumpapillary Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer in Early to Severe Stages of Glaucoma: Correlation with Central Visual Function and Visual Field Indexes.
To compare the circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) and the macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) in glaucoma patients at different disease stages and to evaluate correlations between optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters with central visual function and visual field (VF) indexes. ⋯ Inner macular parameters performed as well as cpRNFL in patients with different stages of glaucoma. Inferior macular GCIPL sectors, minimum GCIPL thickness, and the inferior cpRNFL quadrant best differentiate disease severity and correlate with central visual function and VF indexes.
