Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyDay surgery for breast cancer: effects of a psychoeducational telephone intervention on functional status and emotional distress.
To determine the efficacy of a nursing intervention based on self-regulation theory known as the Attentional Focus and Symptom Management Intervention (AFSMI) in enhancing physical and emotional well-being in women who underwent day surgery for breast cancer. ⋯ Findings validate the use of the self-regulation model in designing individualized nursing interventions. Redirecting attention and focusing on concrete objective features hold potential in developing other innovative nursing interventions.

To assess the effect of an educational homecare program on pain relief in patients with advanced cancer. ⋯ Homecare nurses can be trained to effectively administer the educational program during their regular homecare visits.

To examine key aspects of delirium in a sample of hospitalized older patients with cancer. ⋯ Nurses caring for older patients with cancer should perform systematic and ongoing assessments of cognitive behavioral performance to detect delirium early. The prevention and management of delirium hinge on the identification and treatment of the multiple risk factors and etiologic mechanisms that underlie delirium. The large number of patients discharged while still delirious has significant implications for posthospital care and recovery.

To explore the topic of moral distress in nurses related to witnessing futile care. ⋯ The ethical dilemma of futile care is complex. Additional research and support are needed for patients, families, and nurses.

To explore the prevalence and intensity of depression, fatigue, and pain in survivors of lung cancer; to examine the relationship of symptoms in a cluster; and to examine the relationship of the symptom cluster to quality of life (QOL). ⋯ Healthcare providers must assess the potential for symptoms to cluster, adversely affecting key patient outcomes such as QOL. Through increased knowledge of symptom clusters, clinicians will be able to more effectively target the most distressing set of symptoms for intervention.
