Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Decision preparation, satisfaction and regret in a multi-center sample of men with newly diagnosed localized prostate cancer.
To describe relationships between use of the Personal Patient Profile-Prostate (P3P) decision support system and patient characteristics, and perceived preparation for decision making (PrepDM), satisfaction and decisional regret in the context of prostate cancer treatment choice. ⋯ Information received and used between biopsy and the treatment options consult visit is likely to make a difference in decision satisfaction.

The purpose of this study was to describe older hospital patients' discharge experiences on participation in the discharge planning. ⋯ To determine the extent of elderly patients' desire to participate, one must actively look for it both through research and in the hands-on process of discharge.

Measuring shared decision making in the consultation: a comparison of the OPTION and Informed Decision Making instruments.
To investigate the applied and conceptual relationship between two measures of shared decision making using the OPTION instrument developed in Wales and the Informed Decision Making instrument developed in Seattle, USA using audio-taped consultation data from a UK general practice population. ⋯ Shared decision making tools are a useful way of capturing the presence or absence of specific shared decision making skills and changes in skills acquisition over time. However there may be limits in the extent to which the concept of shared decision making can be measured and that more easily measured skills will be emphasised to the detriment of other important shared decision making skills.

The effects of a shared decision-making intervention in primary care of depression: a cluster-randomized controlled trial.
Patient-centred depression care approaches should better address barriers of insufficient patient information and involvement in the treatment decision process. Additional research is needed to test the effect of increased patient participation on outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess, if patient participation in decision-making via a shared decision-making intervention leads to improved treatment adherence, satisfaction, and clinical outcome without increasing consultation time. ⋯ The study results encourage the implementation of patient participation in primary care of depression.

The LBP patient perception scale: a new predictor of LBP episode outcomes among primary care patients.
To describe a new tool designed to capture patients' perception of their low back pain (LBP) episodes-the patient perception scale (PPS) and test its ability to predict episode outcomes. ⋯ The PPS-pt could potentially be used as part of the standard initial patient evaluation of new LBP patients, as a proxy for "yellow flags" (markers of psychosocial risk) where a positive score might be the equivalent to high-risk identification. The apparent advantage of this scale is its brevity and simplicity of administration. The separation, through this scale of pain episodes into simple and complex LBP might be a useful tool for helping direct resources and avoiding chronicity.
