The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of an oral supplementation with a Curcuma longa ethanol and aqueous extract on the susceptibility to oxidation of cellular and subcellular membranes affected in the atherosclerotic process, such as erythrocyte membranes and liver microsomes, in rabbits fed with a high-fat diet. ⋯ The results of this study indicated that oral administration of a nutritional dose of C. longa extracts reduces the susceptibility to oxidation of erythrocyte and liver microsome membranes in vitro and may contribute to the prevention of effects caused by a diet high in fat and cholesterol in blood and liver during the development of atherosclerosis.

Studies on duodenal juice enzyme activities were carried out on suckling Wistar rats born to dams given ethanol during gestation and suckling. The results were compared with offspring of dams given diets containing no ethanol. Comparisons were also made with offspring of dams given ethanol and folic acid supplementation to observe whether a folate supplement could sufficiently reverse the negative effect of ethanol consumption. ⋯ Our findings indicated that, under basal conditions, ethanol treatment during gestation and lactation negatively affects the digestive function in offspring. The effects of ethanol were slightly attenuated in rats supplemented with folic acid for amylase activities. Although extrapolation from animal studies can be tenuous, the present findings may explain the use of folic acid in the prevention of damage induced by ethanol to increase the amylase levels to physiologic concentrations.

Effect of the ingestion of a dietary product containing Lactobacillus johnsonii La1 on Helicobacter pylori colonization in children.
Dietary components such as vegetable or probiotic microorganisms have been proposed as an alternative solution to decrease Helicobacter pylori colonization in at-risk populations. Some strains of lactic acid bacteria have been shown to exert bacteriostatic or bactericidal effects against H. pylori in in vitro and in vivo models of infection by this pathogen. We investigated whether regular ingestion of a dietary product containing Lactobacillus johnsonii La1 or L. paracasei ST11 would interfere with H. pylori colonization in children. ⋯ Regular ingestion of a product containing Lactobacillus La1 may represent an interesting alternative to modulate H. pylori colonization in children infected by this pathogen.
