Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common metabolic and endocrine abnormality in reproductive-aged women. The aim of this study was to investigate the relevance between major dietary patterns and PCOS. ⋯ The results indicated that the high-GI (high-fat) dietary pattern had an incremental effect on the odds of PCOS. Moreover, the anti-inflammatory dietary pattern had a reduction effect on the risk for PCOS. It's worth noting that more prospective studies are required to confirm the findings of this study.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative process that affects the motor function and involves an inflammatory response and B vitamin deficiencies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of B-group vitamin-producing and immunomodulatory lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in a murine model of PD. ⋯ The results showed the potential of a selected LAB mixture to improve motor behavior and neuroinflammation in PD. This probiotic mixture could be used as an adjunct treatment in the control of PD.

The aim of this study was to investigate the uncertain effects of high saturated fatty acids (SFAs) or fructose intake on cholesterol and lipoproteins with an insight of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9)- and cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36)-induced mechanisms. ⋯ High intakes of dietary SFAs and fructose might induce dysregulations in the cholesterol synthesis and blood lipoprotein levels via proposed nutrient-sensitive biomarkers PCSK9 and CD36 in liver and extrahepatic tissues involved in cholesterol homeostasis.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 causes the potentially fatal coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Already during the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 1, the use of vitamin C was suggested. Many patients with severe COVID-19 have elevated levels of the mediators interleukin-6 and endothelin-1. ⋯ Vitamin C is cheap and safe. Hence, using a relatively low dose of vitamin C as prophylaxis, and in cases of severe COVID-19, an (intravenous) high-dose regimen may be beneficial. Ongoing clinical trials are expected to provide more definitive evidence.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS), a multiplex risk factor for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, is increasingly prevalent worldwide. Ellagitannin geraniin, a polyphenol found in the rind of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum), has demonstrated therapeutic effects against metabolism dysfunction. The aim of this study was to characterize the metabolic effects and possible mechanism of geraniin in rats with MetS induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). ⋯ Geraniin supplementation mitigated metabolic anomalies of MetS in rats, making it an attractive drug candidate for further investigation.
