We aimed to investigate the effect of iron deficiency on basal- and contraction-induced increases in muscle protein synthesis. ⋯ These results suggest that severe iron deficiency decreases not only basal but also muscle contraction-induced increases in protein synthesis due to, at least in part, downregulation of the protein synthesis signaling pathway in the skeletal muscle.

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is viral skin infection that is most commonly observed in children. Zinc homeostasis is essential for proper immune function, especially in host-virus interactions. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of oral zinc sulfate treatment in children with MC. ⋯ Our findings support the use of oral zinc sulfate as a therapy for children with MC.

The objective of this study was to investigate the association between measures of body composition based on bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and histologic severity of liver disease in a pediatric cohort with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). ⋯ There is an inverse association between BIA-based measures of muscle mass and severity of hepatic steatosis in children with NAFLD. BIA data could further inform clinical decision making in this context.

Dietary intake of vegetables, fruit, and antioxidants and risk of ulcerative colitis: A case-control study in Japan.
Oxidative stress is considered one of the etiologic factors involved in ulcerative colitis (UC), yet there is limited epidemiologic information regarding the relationship between antioxidant intake and the risk of UC. The aim of the present case-control study in Japan was to examine the association between intake of green and yellow vegetables, other vegetables, fruit, vitamin C, vitamin E, retinol, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, and cryptoxanthin and UC risk. ⋯ Intake of other vegetables, vitamin C, and retinol was inversely associated with UC risk.

3GO, defined as the simultaneous presence of hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia, is rising in Asians. We determined polygenetic risk scores (PRS) for 3GO risk and the interactions between PRS and lifestyle habits on 3GO risk in Korean adults aged 40 to 77 y recruited from the urban hospital cohort of the Korean Genomic and Epidemiology Study (KoGES), conducted from 2004 to 2013. ⋯ PRSs calculated using a PRS model based on five single-nucleotide polymorphisms revealed that insulin sensitivity and secretion were significantly associated with 3GO risk. Furthermore, reducing alcohol intake, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking might be effective for reducing 3GO risk in individuals with a high PRS.
