Myostatin has been assumed to be involved in the development of sarcopenia in patients with chronic liver disease, but the effect of hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination on myostatin is unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a sustained virologic response at 24 wk (SVR24) after direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy on serum myostatin levels in patients infected with HCV. ⋯ Viral eradication by DAA treatment did not decrease the serum myostatin level in patients infected with HCV.

The association between levels of circulating vitamin C and mortality remains controversial. The aim of this study was to explore the non-linear association between serum vitamin C levels and all-cause or cause-specific mortality. ⋯ Serum vitamin C levels showed a U-shaped relationship with all-cause and CVD-associated deaths among US adults using the NHANES data.

Hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) is a rare and severe imaging manifestation for surgeons, and it may require emergency surgery. We report an unusual case of HPVG in association with the drip rate of enteral nutrition (EN) after laparoscopic-assisted radical total gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y reconstruction. A 66-year-old woman with gastric cancer was admitted to our hospital. ⋯ Hepatic portal venous gas and pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) were discovered subsequently. Early detection and timely effective intervention eventually and completely cured the patient; meanwhile, we avoided unnecessary exploratory laparotomy. Hepatic portal venous gas and PI after radical total gastrectomy can be cured with careful conservative management; the drip rate of EN should be tightly controlled and monitored during treatment after radical total gastrectomy.

Exposure to an obesogenic environment at critical stages of human development may lead to cardiovascular damage during early adulthood, such as left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). The objective of this study is to investigate whether the consumption of diets with different levels of fat associated with fructose drink, introduced to newly weaned rats, leads to cardiovascular damage. ⋯ The administration of diets with different fat and carbohydrate contents associated with fructose drinks introduced to newly weaned rats leads to LVH during early adulthood. The data suggest that the change in leptin-signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 pathway signaling in the groups is related to the occurrence of LVH.

This study aimed to provide data about the role of muscle ultrasound (US) to predict sarcopenia. ⋯ GC, RF, and RA muscle thickness and the RF CSA all may predict sarcopenia accurately in geriatric outpatients.
