Muscle mass is typically assessed by abdominal computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. However, these tests are not routinely performed in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), making sarcopenia assessment difficult. The aim of this study was to develop and validate equations for predicting appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) from data obtained in daily medical practice, with bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)-measured appendicular skeletal muscle mass (BIA-ASM) as a reference. ⋯ These two equations are a valid option for estimating ASM and diagnosing sarcopenia in patients with HNC in all facilities without special equipment.

This study aimed to describe the eating habits of para-athletes who attended a specialized training center in Brazil. ⋯ We identified a higher saturated fat intake in male than in female para-athletes as well as higher protein intake (g/kg) in younger compared with older athletes. In addition, sociodemographic characteristics influenced the dietary intake of some para-athletes, such as length of sports career, age, and income.

Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is influenced by body composition quantity and quality in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and obesity. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) provides a noninvasive quantitative and qualitative body composition assessment. The aim of this study was to determine the role of phase angle (PhA), a BIA-measure of skeletal muscle quality and body cell mass, on CRF in patients with obesity and HFpEF. ⋯ In patients with obesity and HFpEF, a greater PhA is an independent predictor for favorable CRF.

The prognostic nutritional index is widely used for surgery prognosis, but the association between preoperative prognostic nutritional index and short-term prognosis for coronary artery bypass grafting surgery and the profiles of perioperative prognostic nutritional index remain unclear. ⋯ Preoperative prognostic nutritional index is an independent indicator for in-hospital mortality of for coronary artery bypass grafting surgery, and the variation trend of prognostic nutritional index during perioperation tends to be U-shaped.

The new C-reactive protein (CRP)-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index is an immune nutrition scoring system based on serum CRP) serum albumin, and lymphocyte counts. The aim of this study was to verify the prognostic value of the CALLY index in patients with gastric cancer and to evaluate the superiority of this new system. ⋯ The CALLY index can be used as an independent prognostic factor for patients with gastric cancer, and constructs a nomogram prediction model combining TNM staging, BMI, and CALLY index, which yields better predictions than traditional TNM staging.
