The aim of this study is to assess the changes in body mass index and waist circumference (WC) and their associations with sociodemographic, behavioral, and health characteristics in non-institutionalized older people in southern Brazil over a period of ≤6 y. ⋯ Despite the high proportion of older people who kept their body mass index and WC stable during this period, many of them lost body mass and gained WC. The findings also highlighted the importance of age in the nutritional changes observed in the population.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether low skeletal muscle mass before initial treatment is an independent prognostic factor defining overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients diagnosed with stage III cervical cancer. ⋯ A low pretreatment SMI is an independent prognostic factor for OS in patients diagnosed with stage III cervical cancer and treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of body fat, anti- and inflammatory adipokines with anti- and oxidative markers. ⋯ The body fat measures and adiposity-related inflammation (chemerin) were positively associated with antioxidative markers in children, whereas the adiponectin (anti-inflammatory marker) was inversely associated with FRAP (antioxidative marker).

High plasma copper (Cu) and low zinc (Zn) levels have been associated with depression. However, most studies used low sample sizes and a cross-sectional design, and perinatal data are scarce. We investigated the possible association between pregnancy-specific psychological distress and the plasma CuZn ratio using a prospective design. ⋯ A higher CuZn plasma ratio is an independent determinant of developing pregnancy-specific distress symptoms throughout pregnancy, suggesting that micronutrients could be used as novel biomarkers for psychological distress research of perinatal mood disorders.

Glia (i.e., astrocyte and microglia) activation in the central nervous system plays a critical role in developing neuropathic pain. Microglia can be activated into proinflammatory (M1) and anti-inflammatory (M2) phenotypes. Switching microglial polarization from M1 to M2 phenotypes represents a novel therapeutic strategy for neuropathic pain. Curcumin has been widely used for its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. This study investigated effects of curcumin on astrocyte activation and microglia polarization in the cuneate nucleus (CN) and development of neuropathic pain behavior after chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the median nerve. ⋯ In our findings, curcumin switches microglial phenotypes from M1 to M2 by suppressing astrocytic activation, reducing proinflammatory cytokine release, promoting anti-inflammatory cytokine production, and contributing to relief of neuropathic pain.
