We analyzed the prevalence of sarcopenia among systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients with respect to quality of life, disability, organ involvement, and muscle function. ⋯ Sarcopenia is common in patients with SSc and is associated with physical impairment that affects everyday life and participation in work. Interestingly, although age is the main risk factor for sarcopenia in the general population, it did not differ between sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic SSc patients in our study. Instead, the number of immunosuppressive drugs was significantly higher among sarcopenic patients.

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) supplementation is associated with a significant reduction in cardiovascular disease but the underlying mechanism is still unclear. ⋯ This in vitro study provides the first evidence that EVOO downregulates platelet H2O2 and in turn NOX2 activity via H2O2 scavenging.

Calcium is an essential nutrient required for peak bone mass growth during adolescence and into young adulthood. The aim of this study was to examine the calcium intake of Australian adolescents and young adults from both food sources and supplements; and the relationship between calcium intake and intake of food groups. ⋯ Calcium intake among Australian adolescents and young adults remains below recommendations, particularly in females. A higher intake of calcium was associated with a better dietary pattern. Further investment in interventions is indicated.

We investigate the association between child dietary diversity and anthropometric status and failure in Sri Lanka while accounting for other child and household factors by employing multivariable logistic and linear regression analyses. ⋯ Child dietary diversity predicted anthropometric status among children ages ≥24 mo. Interventions to address both proximal and distal risk factors for anthropometric status may be necessary in Sri Lanka to reduce anthropometric failure among infants and young children.

This study investigated whether the administration of L-Arginine, the precursor of nitric oxide, increases the percentages of blood endothelial progenitor cells and protects against ischemia/reperfusion induced inflammatory response in a mouse model of hind-limb IR injury. ⋯ A single dose of L-Arginine administration before reperfusion increases the percentage of endothelial progenitor cells and reduces the inflammatory reaction locally and systemically after ischemia/reperfusion injury.
