Enteral administration of a simulated amniotic fluid in preventing feeding intolerance in very low birthweight neonates: A randomized controlled trial.
Feeding intolerance (FI) is a common finding in preterm neonates. Enteral administration of different forms of amniotic fluid (AF) has been tried for treating FI in high-risk neonates. Simulated amniotic fluid (SAF) is a solution with a similar electrolyte composition to human AF. The aim of this study was to examine whether enteral administration of SAF would improve feeding tolerance in very low birthweight (VLBW) neonates. ⋯ Results of the present study demonstrated that SAF solution might improve feeding tolerance in VLBW babies without evidence of its systemic absorption. Larger multicenter randomized studies are recommended.

Effect of early initiation of enteral nutrition on short-term clinical outcomes of very premature infants: A national multicenter cohort study in China.
The management of enteral nutrition in very preterm infants (VPIs) is still controversial, and there is no consensus on the optimal time point after birth at which enteral nutrition can be started. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of early initiation of enteral nutrition on the short-term clinical outcomes of VPIs. ⋯ Early initiation of enteral feeding was associated with less frequency of feeding intolerance, EUGR, and LOS, and it may shorten the time to reach total enteral feeding without increasing the risk of NEC.

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential benefits of using an energy-dense, high-protein (HP) formula enriched with β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB), fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS), and vitamin D (VitD) for enteral feeding in the intensive care unit (ICU). ⋯ An energy-dense, HP-HMB-FOS-VitD formula provided a more satisfactory protein intake and a higher provision of caloric intake from enteral nutrition than a standard HP formula in mechanically ventilated patients with COVID-19. Lower rates of gastrointestinal intolerance and ICU-acquired infections were also observed.

Analysis of ESPEN and GLIM algorithms reveals specific drivers for the diagnosis of malnutrition in patients with chronic gastrointestinal diseases.
Disease-related malnutrition (MN) is common in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC), short bowel syndrome (SBS), and chronic pancreatitis (CP). Different MN risk screening tools and diagnostic criteria of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) algorithms were analyzed for their diagnostic accuracy and role as specific drivers to diagnose MN in patients with LC, SBS, and CP. ⋯ RFH-NPT and MUST performed better in conjunction with the GLIM algorithm than NRS-2002. MN was diagnosed more frequently by GLIM than the ESPEN algorithm in LC, SBS, and CP. Individual criteria acted as specific drivers in MN in chronic gastrointestinal diseases.

Effect of malnutrition and nutritional support to reduce infections in elderly hospitalized patients with cancer: A multicenter survey in China.
Malnutrition is common among elderly patients with cancer, and greatly affects patients' quality of life. Malnutrition is a key factor in the development of systemic, chronic, low-grade inflammation that can exacerbate. ⋯ Many elderly hospitalized patients with cancer have local or systemic infections, and good nutrition is associated with lower rates of infection. Receiving nutritional guidance or support is associated with lower infection rates in elderly patients with cancer.
