Comparison of analgesic efficacy of paracetamol and tramadol for pain relief in active labor.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety profile of paracetamol in comparison with tramadol for pain relief during active labor. ⋯ Intravenous paracetamol provides comparable analgesia as intramuscular tramadol during active labor.

A 35-year-old man had symptomatic hyperammonemia and normal liver function after repeat kidney transplantation. He presented with gastrointestinal symptoms, which quickly progressed to altered mental status. ⋯ Urine acids and serum organic acids were not diagnostic of any urea cycle disorder. Histology did not reveal a clear etiology for the hyperammonemia.

Landiolol in the treatment of the intraoperative supraventricular tachycardia: a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
Supraventricular tachycardia during the induction of anesthesia may carry a higher risk. ⋯ Intravenous landiolol (loading dose of 0.125 mg/kg) may effectively control intraoperative supraventricular tachycardia during anesthesia. It inhibited the increases in HR during the induction of anesthesia. The effect of landiolol on blood pressure was minimal without decreasing diastolic blood pressure and with the minor reduction of systolic blood pressure (ClinicalTrials.gov number, ChiCTR-TRC-12003021).

The role of perioperative chewing gum on gastric fluid volume and gastric pH: a meta-analysis.
To determine if preoperative gum chewing affects gastric pH and gastric fluid volume. ⋯ Chewing gum in the perioperative period causes small but statically significant increases in gastric fluid volume and no change in gastric pH. The increase in gastric fluid most likely is of no clinical significance in terms of aspiration risk for the patient. Elective surgery should not necessarily be canceled or delayed in healthy patients who accidentally chew gum preoperatively.
