Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
Development and validation of PRE-DELIRIC (PREdiction of DELIRium in ICu patients) delirium prediction model for intensive care patients: observational multicentre study.
To develop and validate a delirium prediction model for adult intensive care patients and determine its additional value compared with prediction by caregivers. ⋯ The PRE-DELIRIC model for intensive care patients consists of 10 risk factors that are readily available within 24 hours after intensive care admission and has a high predictive value. Clinical prediction by nurses and physicians performed significantly worse. The model allows for early prediction of delirium and initiation of preventive measures. Trial registration Clinical trials NCT00604773 (development study) and NCT00961389 (validation study).

Lung protective mechanical ventilation and two year survival in patients with acute lung injury: prospective cohort study.
To evaluate the association of volume limited and pressure limited (lung protective) mechanical ventilation with two year survival in patients with acute lung injury. ⋯ Lung protective mechanical ventilation was associated with a substantial long term survival benefit for patients with acute lung injury. Greater use of lung protective ventilation in routine clinical practice could reduce long term mortality in patients with acute lung injury.

To determine whether the use of age adapted D-dimer cut-off values can be translated to primary care patients who are suspected of deep vein thrombosis. ⋯ Combined with a low clinical probability of deep vein thrombosis, use of the age dependent D-dimer cut-off value for patients older than 50 years or the cut-off value of 750 μg/L for patients aged 60 years and older resulted in a considerable increase in the proportion of patients in primary care in whom deep vein thrombosis could be safely excluded, compared with the conventional cut-off value of 500 μg/L.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Facilitated physical activity as a treatment for depressed adults: randomised controlled trial.
To investigate the effectiveness of facilitated physical activity as an adjunctive treatment for adults with depression presenting in primary care. ⋯ The addition of a facilitated physical activity intervention to usual care did not improve depression outcome or reduce use of antidepressants compared with usual care alone.

Serum glucose levels for predicting death in patients admitted to hospital for community acquired pneumonia: prospective cohort study.
To examine whether acute dysglycaemia predicts death in people admitted to hospital with community acquired pneumonia. ⋯ Serum glucose levels on admission to hospital can predict death in patients with community acquired pneumonia without pre-existing diabetes. Acute hyperglycaemia may therefore identify patients in need of intensified care to reduce the risk of death from community acquired pneumonia.
