The aim of this study was to investigate the association between earlobe crease (ELC) and cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) in asymptomatic hypertensive subjects. ⋯ Patients with ELC had higher CAVI than normal subjects. This observation of ELC is simple, adds no cost and can be easily made by most physicians, and it may provide important predictive information of arterial stiffness and subclinical atherosclerosis in asymptomatic hypertensive subjects. © 2013 S. This study was undertaken to determine the frequency of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-producing Staphylococcus aureus among strains isolated in our laboratory and to study the association of PVL-positive strains with clinical disease. ⋯ This study revealed the presence of genes for PVL in both MSSA and MRSA, associated mostly with SSTI and respiratory tract infections, supporting previous observations that PVL production is widespread among S. aureus strains obtained from different clinical sources.

Fever is one major cardinal sign of disease. It results from an intricate interplay between the immune system and the central nervous system. Bacterial or viral infections activate peripheral immune competent organs which send inflammatory signals to the brain and lead to an increase in body temperature. ⋯ The early life pathogenic encounter heightens the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis response, dampens the innate immune system, and consequently reduces the febrile response to a subsequent immune challenge during adulthood. This 'programming' effect operates only when such early life immune challenges occur during a critical window of either prenatal or postnatal development. In this review, the mechanisms underlying the long-lasting impact of perinatal immune challenge on adult fever are addressed.
