Randomized Controlled TrialContralateral cerebral hemoglobin oxygen saturation changes in patients undergoing thoracotomy with general anesthesia with or without paravertebral block: a randomized controlled trial.
Perioperative analgesia during thoracotomy is often achieved by combining paravertebral block (PVB) with general anesthesia (GA). Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can detect changes in cerebral oxygenation resulting from nociceptive stimuli in the awake state or under sedation. We used NIRS to measure changes in cerebral blood flow provoked by thoracotomy incision made under GA and determine how these changes were influenced by supplementation of GA with PVB. ⋯ Changes in the cerebral O2Hb concentration were detected by NIRS immediately after surgical incision under GA, but not in the presence of a PNB. NIRS could be used to monitor surgical pain. PVB inhibited changes in oxygenation induced by incision-provoked pain.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of pregabalin on postoperative pain after hysterectomy under spinal anesthesia with intrathecal morphine: a randomized controlled trial.
To determine if preoperative pregabalin could decrease 24-h postoperative morphine consumption after spinal anesthesia with intrathecal morphine compared with placebo. ⋯ A single preoperative dose of pregabalin 150 mg did not reduce 24-h postoperative morphine consumption or pain scores or prolong the time to first analgesic rescue in spinal anesthesia with intrathecal morphine.

Randomized Controlled TrialEndotracheal intubation: ultrasound-guided versus fiberscope in patients with cervical spine immobilization.
Ultrasound has growing applications in airway management during anesthesia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of real-time ultrasound-guided tracheal intubation in patients with cervical spine immobilization relative to fiberscope-guided tracheal intubation. ⋯ PACTR201602001476292.

Randomized Controlled TrialCombined intraoperative paracetamol and preoperative dexamethasone reduces postoperative sore throat: a prospective randomized study.
Postoperative sore throat (POST) after general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation is a common and undesirable complication. In this study, we evaluated the combined effects of paracetamol and dexamethasone on the prevention of POST in patients after general anesthesia. ⋯ Paracetamol and dexamethasone infusion reduced the incidence of POST without serious complications in patients for urologic surgery under general anesthesia.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyHydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 versus crystalloid co-loading during general anesthesia induction: a randomized controlled trial.
Hypotension and decreased cardiac output (CO) are common adverse effects during anesthesia induction depending on the patient's pre-anesthetic cardiac condition. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of hydroxyethyl starch (HES) 130/0.4 to prevent hypotension and decreased CO during the induction of general anesthesia. ⋯ Co-loading using HES 130/0.4 prevented hypotension and decreased CO during general anesthesia induction.
