Randomized Controlled TrialIntrathecal sufentanil (1.5 microg) added to hyperbaric bupivacaine (0.5%) for elective cesarean section provides adequate analgesia without need for pruritus therapy.
We compared the effects of different doses of intrathecal sufentanil when administered together with hyperbaric bupivacaine for elective caesarean section. ⋯ The addition of sufentanil 1.5 and 2.5 microg to hyperbaric bupivacaine provided adequate anesthesia for caesarean delivery and good postoperative analgesia. In addition, the incidence of pruritus was significantly lower in the 1.5-microg sufentanil group when compared with that in the 2.5- and 5-microg groups.

Randomized Controlled TrialPreoperative administration of intravenous flurbiprofen axetil reduces postoperative pain for spinal fusion surgery.
The aim of the study was to investigate postoperative analgesia and the opioid-sparing effect of the preoperative administration of intravenous flurbiprofen axetil in patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery. ⋯ As compared with postoperative administration, preoperative administration of intravenous flurbiprofen axetil provides better postoperative analgesia and an opioid-sparing effect in patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery under general anesthesia.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of a protease inhibitor, ulinastatin, on coagulation and fibrinolysis in abdominal surgery.
Ulinastatin is well known to inhibit the activity of polymorphonuclear leukocyte elastase (PMNE). The PMNE concentration correlates with the activities of coagulation and fibrinolysis. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of ulinastatin, a protease inhibitor, on coagulation and fibrinolysis in abdominal surgery. ⋯ Ulinastatin could inhibit coagulation and fibrinolysis in abdominal surgery.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of peak inspiratory flow on gas exchange, pulmonary mechanics, and lung histology in rabbits with injured lungs.
The aim of this study was to evaluate, using a rabbit model, the little-known effect of different levels of peak inspiratory flow on acutely injured lungs. ⋯ In rabbits with injured lungs, high peak inspiratory flow with high tidal volume (V(T)) reduces the Pa(O(2))/FI(O(2)) ratio and increases the lung wet-to-dry ratio.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEffects of landiolol on hemodynamic response and seizure duration during electroconvulsive therapy.
This study was done to evaluate the effect of landiolol, an ultra-short-acting beta-blocker, on the hemodynamic response and the duration of seizure activity during electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). ⋯ As the landiolol dose of 0.2 mg x kg(-1) caused shorter seizure duration, and because the hemodynamic effects after ECT of the 0.1 mg x kg(-1) and 0.2 mg x kg(-1) doses were similar, it was concluded that a 0.1 mg x kg(-1) landiolol bolus was the appropriate dose pretreatment before ECT.
