[Social desirability in pain therapy : Response behavior of various professional groups on the implementation of multi-professional pain management.]
Research on the quality of pain management is often based on self-reported data pertaining to internal regulations provided by employees. However, data examining the correctness of the information given are rare. The project "Pain-Free Hospital" facilitated such an analysis and compared the answers provided by staff members with currently existing regulations. ⋯ Therapy plans and pain management-related regulations are known in hospitals after a systematic training. Data suggest that hospitals without regulations show a trend towards social desirability.

Post amputation pain presents a challenge for pain physicians and is often detrimental to the patient's quality of life. ⋯ Capsaicin 8 % cutaneous patches seem to be effective and safe for the treatment of post amputation pain, notably in patients suffering from phantom limb pain.

[Quality management in regional anesthesia using the example of a Regional Anesthesia Surveillance System (RASS)].
Regional anesthesia and regional analgesia techniques with or without a continuous catheter are frequently utilized in all areas of modern anesthesiology. There are individual and economic benefits but also risks involved with those techniques. ⋯ Therefore, it is important to create national and international databases with large case numbers utilizing standardized definitions of complications in order to allow realistic risk assessment and early discovery of potential dangers and preventive actions. This article shows the integration of standardized codes from the Regional Anesthesia Surveillance System with a software tool to allow high-quality data acquisition and the building of a foundation for national and international data collection and analysis as well as for feedback of institutional data for individual process optimization as part of a quality management system.

Back pain is a challenge for case management but is a health insurance fund (HIF) that identifies high risk patients and includes them in a back pain assessment and a multimodal program cost-effective? ⋯ The HIF was responsible for the study investment and project partners shared the training of the HIF regional case managers.

[Evaluation of the "initiative pain-free clinic" for quality improvement in postoperative pain management. A prospective controlled study].
Demonstration of improved postoperative pain management by implementation of the S3 guidelines on treatment of acute perioperative and posttraumatic pain, by the integrated quality management concept "quality management acute pain" of the TÜV Rheinland or by participation in the benchmark project "Quality improvement in postoperative pain management" (QUIPS). ⋯ The main objective of the certification concept quality management acute pain as a tool for the successful implementation of the S3 guidelines on treatment of acute perioperative and posttraumatic pain, led to a significant improvement in patient outcome. Participation in QUIPS is an ideal supplement to TÜV Rheinland certification and can be recommended as a benchmarking tool to evaluate outcome.
