Delirium assessment in neuro-critically ill patients: A validation study.
Delirium is underinvestigated in the neuro-critically ill, although the harmful effect of delirium is well established in patients in medical and surgical intensive care units (ICU).To detect delirium, a valid tool is needed. We hypothesized that delirium screening would be feasible in patients with acute brain injury and we aimed to validate and compare the Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU and the Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist against clinical International Classification of Diseases-10 criteria as reference. ⋯ Our findings suggest that the Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist may be a valid tool and the Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU is less suitable for delirium detection for patients in the Neuro-ICU. In the neuro-critically ill, delirium screening is challenged by limited feasibility.

Patterns of cerebral tissue oxygen tension and cytoplasmic redox state in bacterial meningitis.
Compromised cerebral energy metabolism is common in patients with bacterial meningitis. In this study, simultaneous measurements of cerebral oxygen tension and lactate/pyruvate ratio were compared to explore whether disturbed energy metabolism was usually caused by insufficient tissue oxygenation or compromised oxidative metabolism of pyruvate indicating mitochondrial dysfunction. ⋯ This study demonstrated that compromised cerebral energy metabolism, evidenced by increased LP ratio, was common in patients with severe bacterial meningitis while not related to insufficient tissue oxygenation.

Coffee consumption and work satisfaction among Scandinavian anaesthesiologists: A survey.
It is a common prejudice that anaesthetic doctors are believed to have high coffee consumption. In this study, we aimed to assess the association between coffee drinking and work satisfaction among Scandinavian anaesthesiologists. We hypothesised that coffee consumption was positively correlated with work satisfaction. ⋯ In this survey, we found high work satisfaction among Scandinavian anaesthesiologists, with no difference between coffee and non-coffee drinkers.

Brachial plexus block of the posterior and the lateral cord using ropivacaine 7.5 mg/mL.
We recently showed that the novel combination of a superficial cervical plexus block, a suprascapular nerve block, and the lateral sagittal infraclavicular brachial plexus block (LSIB) provides an alternative anaesthetic method for arthroscopic shoulder surgery. In this study, we hypothesised that the LSIB dose for this shoulder block could be significantly reduced by injecting only towards the shoulder relevant posterior and lateral cords. Our aim was to determine the minimum effective volume in 50% of the patients (MEV50 ) and to estimate the MEV95, when using ropivacaine 7.5 mg/mL to block these cords. ⋯ For single-deposit infraclavicular posterior and lateral cord block, the MEV95 of ropivacaine 7.5 mg/mL was estimated to 9.0 mL.
