Is proximal femoral nailing a good procedure for teaching in orthogeriatrics?
Proximal femoral nailing is a common operation in orthogeriatrics and a highly standardized procedure. For teaching purposes, this operation is often performed by residents and supervised by attending physicians. The objective of this study is to investigate if teaching this operation influences the surgical in-house complication rate. ⋯ We conclude that proximal femoral nailing is an operation suitable for teaching purposes. However, patients between 71 and 80 years of age seem to be at an increased risk for cut-out if operated by a resident.

Clinical TrialProprioception 3 years after shoulder arthroplasty in 3D motion analysis: a prospective study.
This prospective study evaluated the development of proprioception over the course of 3 years after shoulder arthroplasty. ⋯ In conclusion, proprioception that was measured by an AAR test remained unchanged or deteriorated 3 years after shoulder arthroplasty. The postoperative deterioration of proprioception was more distinctive in HEMI than in TSA group.

Case ReportsKlippel-Trenaunay syndrome: a rare cause of disabling pain after a femoral fracture.
Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is characterized by a cutaneous vascular nevus of the involved extremity, as well as bone and soft tissue hypertrophy of the extremity and venous malformations. We present the case of a 52-year-old man with a femoral fracture and a history of haemangiomas, limb bone hypertrophy and varicosity. ⋯ According to our knowledge, this is the second case of KTS managed for femoral fracture. Unlike the previous report in literature, in this case a severe disabling neuropathic pain complicated the clinical management.

Clinical TrialDetermination of cephazolin, ceftazidime, and ceftriaxone distribution in nucleus pulposus.
The intervertebral disc is the largest avascular structure in the adult body and minimal blood flow through capillary beds only supplying the outer regions of the disc, which relies on the passive diffusion as a major factor for nutrition and uptake of molecules, including antibiotics. This study is to detect the serum and nucleus pulposus (NP) levels of cephazolin, ceftazidime, and ceftriaxone and to assess this antibiotic permeability into the intervertebral disc. ⋯ The antibiotics of cephazolin, ceftazidime, and ceftriaxone had concentration in the NP tissue, which was higher than the stated MIC. Ceftazidime had highest penetration in to NP tissue, and ceftriaxone had the lowest penetration in to NP tissue.

Correlation of low back pain caused by lumbar spinal stenosis and depression in women: a clinical study.
Low back pain (LBP) due to spinal stenosis may be one of the most debilitating symptoms to decrease the quality of life. The cause and effect association of LBP and depression is vague. Pain may also be a somatization symptom of depression. This is more frequent in the female population. This clinical study was designed to evaluate the correlation between the level of back pain caused by lumbar spinal stenosis and depression in the female population. ⋯ Our findings indicated a relationship between lumbar spinal stenosis associated pain levels and depression. However, the cause and result relationship still needs to be established yet.
