Randomized Controlled TrialClinical outcome and success rates of ACI for cartilage defects of the patella: a subgroup analysis from a controlled randomized clinical phase II trial (CODIS study).
Cartilage defects of the patella are considered as a problematic entity. Purpose of the present study was to evaluate the outcome of patients treated with autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) for cartilage defects of the patella in comparison to patient with defects of the femoral condyles. ⋯ ACI seems an appropriate surgical treatment for cartilage defects of the patella leading to a high success rate. In this study, the clinical outcome in patients with patellar defects was even better than the already excellent results in patients with defects of the femoral condyle even though the study included relatively large defect sizes for both groups (mean defect size 6.0 ± 1.7 and 5.4 ± 1.6 for femur and patella, respectively).

Functional and radiological outcome of distal radius fractures stabilized by volar-locking plate with a minimum follow-up of 1 year.
Distal radius fractures (DRF) are the most common fractures of the upper extremities and incidence is expected to continue rising as life expectancy increases. Palmar locking plate stabilizing has since become the standard treatment for dorsally displaced DRF. Main aim of this study was to investigate correlation between radiological and clinical outcome in patients stabilized by palmar locking plate with a minimum follow-up of one year. ⋯ Stabilization of DRF by palmar angular stable locking plate is a safe form of treatment and results in a good clinical and radiological outcome with low complication rate. Ulnar variance showed a significant correlation to grip strength, QuickDASH and Mayo Score, but an unacceptable ulnar variance (> 2 mm) was not associated with a worse clinical important outcome. Age (< 65/> 65 years), gender and type of immobilization had no impact on the complication rate or in the final functional or radiological outcome.

Three-dimensional templating in hip arthroplasty: the basis for template-directed instrumentation?
Computed tomography-based three-dimensional models may allow the accurate determination of the center of rotation, lateral and anterior femoral offsets, and the required implant size in total hip arthroplasty. In this cadaver study, the accuracy of anatomical reconstruction was evaluated using a three-dimensional planning tool. ⋯ The exact anatomy of the patient and the required size and position of the prosthesis were precisely analyzed using a templating software. Based on the present findings, the development of template-directed instrumentation is conceivable using this method. However, further technical features (e.g., navigation or robot-assisted surgery) are required for improved precision for implant positioning.

ReviewSingle- versus double-bundle patellar graft insertion for isolated MPFL reconstruction in patients with patellofemoral instability: a systematic review of the literature.
The MPFL reconstruction is performed either via a single-bundle (SB) or double-bundle (DB) procedure. The purpose of this study is to perform a systematic review comparing SB versus DB graft for recurrent patellofemoral instability, to summarize current evidence, and to clarify the role of both techniques. We focused on clinical scores, physical examination, complications, revision surgeries, and failures. ⋯ Current study support the use of double-bundle tendon graft for isolated MPFL reconstruction in selected patients with recurrent patellofemoral instability.

Multicenter StudyDevelopment and challenges in setting up an international bone infection registry.
Osteomyelitis is an increasing burden on the society especially due to the emergence of multiple drug-resistant organisms. The lack of a central registry that prospectively collects data on patient risk factors, laboratory test results, treatment modalities, serological analysis results, and outcomes has hampered the research effort that could have improved and provided guidelines for treatments of bone infections. The current manuscript describes the lessons learned in setting up a multi-continent registry. ⋯ Multicenter registry is useful for collecting a large number of cases for analysis. A well-defined data collection practice is important for data quality but challenging to coordinate with the large number of study sites.
