The influence of stem alignment on the bone mineral density around the Polarstem following total hip arthroplasty.
Bone mineral density is important in detecting implant loosening after total hip arthroplasty. The Polarstem can improve postoperative bone mineral density changes, but no information exists on the influence of postoperative stem alignment. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between bone mineral density change and stem alignment following total hip arthroplasty using a cementless Polarstem. ⋯ The cementless Polarstem may have a positive effect on postoperative bone mineral density in the distal femur. However, varus malalignment and anteversion error of the stem could have a negative influence on the bone mineral density changes in the proximal femur.

Management of displaced humeral surgical neck fractures in daily clinical practice: hanging does not re-align the fracture.
It is unclear if the collar and cuff treatment improve alignment in displaced surgical neck fractures of the proximal humerus. Therefore, this study evaluated if the neckshaft angle and extent of displacement would improve between trauma and onset of radiographically visible callus in non-operatively treated surgical neck fractures (Boileau type A, B, C). ⋯ Level IV, retrospective case series.

Preoperative cannabis use does not increase opioid utilization following primary total hip arthroplasty in a propensity matched analysis.
The recreational and medical use of cannabis is being legalized worldwide. Its use has been linked to an increased risk of developing opioid use disorders. As opioids continue to be prescribed after total hip arthroplasty (THA), the influence that preoperative cannabis use may have on postoperative opioid consumption remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between preoperative cannabis use and opioid utilization following primary THA. ⋯ In propensity score matched analyses, preoperative cannabis use was not independently associated with an increase in inpatient or outpatient, 90-days opioid consumption following elective THA.

Diabesity: a superadded effect contributing to worse total primary hip replacement operative outcomes for patients with diabetes and obesity.
Although the independent effects of diabetes mellitus and obesity on total hip replacement (THR) outcomes have been widely studied, their combined effect remains uncharacterised. This study aimed to assess the influence of diabesity on primary THR operative outcomes. ⋯ Diabesity confers a superadded effect over established associations between THR outcomes and obesity and diabetes individually. Patients with diabesity experience worse improvement in hip-specific functional outcome, worse post-operative quality of life, and an increased risk of superficial and deep wound infection following THR.

Lateral locking plate plus antero-posterior lag screws techniques for the management of posterolateral tibial plateau fracture: preliminary clinical results and biomechanical study.
To date, there is no consensus on the optimal surgical strategy for the treatment of posterolateral tibial plateau fracture (PLF). This study introduced a novel, simple technique for treating PLF with a lateral locking plate plus antero-posterior lag screws (LPpLS). ⋯ The LPpLS technique could implement good reconstruction of the PLF, showing satisfactory therapeutic effect. The biomechanical evaluation demonstrated that the LPpLS had better stability in three-dimensional directions for PLF than other fixation strategies.
