Lateral UKA can be a safe solution in a young patients' population: a 10-year follow-up report.
This study aimed to assess the long-term survivorship and functional outcomes of fixed-bearing lateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) in a young patients' population with osteoarthritis limited to the lateral compartment. ⋯ Lateral UKA proved to be an effective treatment option for osteoarthritis affecting the lateral compartment of the knee. The study demonstrated a high survivorship rate and favorable functional outcomes at a mean follow-up of 132.7 months. These findings highlight the potential benefits of fixed-bearing lateral UKA in selected patients with lateral compartment knee pathology.

Autologous microfragmented adipose tissue treatment of knee osteoarthritis demonstrates effectiveness in 68% of patients at 4-year follow-up.
Adipose tissue-derived stem cells are an interesting therapeutic option for early knee osteoarthritis (OA) treatment due to their high plasticity, easiness of harvesting and rapidity of administration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the medium-term effectiveness and safety of Microfragmented Autologous Fat Tissue (MFAT) injection treatment at 4-year follow-up and to investigate potential correlations among patients' pre-treatment clinical condition and clinical outcomes to identify possible predicting factors for procedure success or failure. ⋯ MFAT intra-articular injection is a safe procedure with positive improvements up to 4-year follow-up in patients with early knee OA. These findings suggest MFAT could be a minimally invasive treatment of early knee OA with durable benefits at mid-term evaluation.

ReviewThe role of fibula fixation in combined distal-third tibia and fibula fractures: a systematic literature review.
The role of concomitant fibula fracture fixation in distal-third tibia fractures regarding alignment, union, and functional outcome is still a topic of debate. In this review, we summarize the available comparative literature regarding fibula fixation in distal third lower leg fractures. ⋯ II.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is more likely in younger patients undergoing lower limb arthroplasty: impact on function and quality of life.
The aim of this study was to assess whether PTSD was associated with preoperative and/or postoperative joint-specific function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and whether there were associated preoperative factors. ⋯ One in 25 patients met a provisional PTSD diagnosis; they were younger and had worse preoperative and improvement in postoperative joint specific function and HRQoL. Age and EQ-5D could be used to identify patients at risk.

Safety of immediate open traumatic extensor tendon repair performed at an emergency department minor procedure room.
The superficial location of the extensor tendons makes them particularly vulnerable to lacerations. Patients most commonly present to the emergency department (ED) after these injuries. We aimed to measure the safety of immediate surgical repair of traumatic open extensor tendon injuries in an ED minor procedure room (MPR) under local anesthesia, and the associated post-operative infection and complication rates. ⋯ In this cohort, traumatic extensor tendon repairs performed in an ED MPR were found to be medically safe and to associate with a low postoperative infection rate. As preoperative assessment is simple and practical, and limited medical personnel is utilized, this surgical setting may enable us to reduce medical costs.
