Debunking myths in physician-industry conflicts of interest.

To describe ocular injuries attributable to paintball-related trauma and their management and results. ⋯ Paintball-related ocular injuries are frequently severe and visually devastating. The compulsive use of protective eyewear may have eliminated 97% of injuries in this series and continues to need emphasis to paintball users.

To describe metallic intraocular foreign body (IOFB) injuries and identify prognostic factors for visual outcome and globe survival. ⋯ Multiple prognostic factors were identified in this large analysis of metallic IOFB injuries, which may help predict visual outcome and globe survival. Most of these variables were independent of intervention and can be identified at the time of initial presentation.

To call attention to the myths that surround physician-industry conflicts of interest, to refute their validity, and to propose ways to address them so as to insure that physicians make medical practice decisions in the best interest of their patients. ⋯ Medical organizations and academic institutions are the ones to take the lead in recognizing that these voluntary financial conflicts of interest are unacceptable and should be stopped. Such conflicts mainly relate to the acceptance of gifts and money that are designed to influence behavior and are a form of financial coercion.
