Randomized Controlled Trial Observational StudyThe effect of standard-dose wintertime vitamin D supplementation on influenza infection in immunized nursing home elderly residents.
To investigate whether three-month oral vitamin D supplementation (800 IU in drops) reduces the risk of influenza infection in elderly nursing home residents vaccinated against influenza. ⋯ Elderly nursing home residents in Zagreb County have a significant vitamin D deficiency. The recommended national supplementation of 800 IU daily failed to lead to vitamin D sufficiency and did not reduce the risk of influenza infection among the vaccinated elderly.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of adjunctive lidocaine-based scalp block and laryngotracheal local anesthesia vs general anesthesia only on plasma and cerebrospinal fluid pro-inflammatory cytokine concentrations in patients with cerebral aneurysm: a randomized controlled trial.
To compare the effect of adjunctive lidocaine-based scalp block and laryngotracheal local anesthesia vs general anesthesia only on pro-inflammatory cytokine concentrations in patients with non-ruptured brain aneurysms undergoing elective open surgery. ⋯ Adjunctive lidocaine-based scalp block and laryngotracheal local anesthesia might attenuate CSF IL-6 concentration increase in patients with brain aneurysm.

Randomized Controlled TrialRemifentanil target-controlled infusion with intranasal dexmedetomidine for vitreoretinal procedures: a randomized controlled trial.
To evaluate the consumption of remifentanil (as a primary end-point), analgesia, sedation, hemodynamics, respiratory effects, and surgeon and patient satisfaction (as a secondary end-point) with dexmedetomidine sedation compared with those of remifentanil sedation in patients undergoing vitreoretinal surgery. ⋯ For patients undergoing ophthalmic procedures, sedation with a combination of intranasal dexmedetomidine and an intravenous infusion of remifentanil provides lower remifentanil consumption, better satisfaction scores, and a lower complication rate than sedation with a remifentanil infusion alone.

Randomized Controlled TrialAnterior quadratus lumborum block for ambulatory laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a randomized controlled trial.
To explore the effects of an anterior quadratus lumborum block (QLB) on opioid consumption, pain, nausea, and vomiting (PONV) after ambulatory laparoscopic cholecystectomy. ⋯ Preoperative anterior QLB for laparoscopic cholecystectomy did not affect postoperative opioid requirements and pain. However, anterior QLB may decrease PONV.
