COMPARISON OF CAROTID STENOSIS GRADING BY CT ANGIOGRAPHY AND DOPPLER ULTRASONOGRAPHY: HOW THE STATISTICAL METHODS APPLIED INFLUENCE THE RESULTS.
In this study, we compared the measurement of carotid stenosis by computed tomography angiography (CTA) based on the narrowest diameter versus cross sectional area (CSA) with the measurement by color Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) as a reference standard, and analyzed how the application of different statistical methods affected the result. On 113 carotid arteries with ≥50% stenosis, we quantified the level of correlation among the three measurements, sensitivity, specificity, and differences in the estimated stenosis level. Correlation between both CTA measurements was good with Pearson's ρ between 0.87 and 0.91 (p<0.001). ⋯ A good correlation between CSA and diameter measurement just means that these are two related features of stenosis, it does not mean good agreement. CTA (CSA) method better detected surgical stenoses, whereas CTA (diameter) systematically underestimated stenosis level. The study of differences between the measurements indicated agreement better than the calculation of correlation coefficients.

FERTILITY OUTCOMES AFTER MEDICAL AND SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF TUBAL ECTOPIC PREGNANCY.
The objective was to investigate whether the method of treatment (surgical or medical) affects achieving a new pregnancy, as well as the time to and prognosis of the new pregnancy, in women with ectopic pregnancy (EP). Information on patients treated in our hospital between 2013 and 2014 for EP was retrieved from the computerized patient records. Data on whether these patients achieved pregnancy after EP treatment, time from treatment to new pregnancy, and prognosis of pregnancy were collected by phone interviews. ⋯ A new pregnancy was present in 84 (83.2%) of the women after EP treatment. There was no significant difference among the women having undergone medical treatment (methotrexate), surgical treatment, medical treatment followed by surgical treatment, or observational management approach in terms of achieving a new pregnancy after treatment and time to and prognosis of the new pregnancy. The study could not determine which treatment method would be superior in women with EP and in planning future pregnancy, but concluded that close clinical and laboratory monitoring is appropriate before deciding on aggressive interventions.

THERMOACTIVE NITINOL CLIPS AS PRIMARY AND SECONDARY STERNAL CLOSURE AFTER CARDIAC SURGERY - FIRST EXPERIENCE IN SLOVENIA.
Although there has been a trend towards minimally invasive and sternum-sparing procedures, median sternotomy is still a standard surgical approach in cardiac surgery. Many techniques and innovations for closure of sternal osteotomy have been developed with contradictory results. In this report, we present our first experience with the nitinol-made sternal closure system in the primary, as well as secondary closure of sternal osteotomy. ⋯ After 6-month follow-up, all patients were doing well with their sternums clinically stable and the sternotomy wounds completely healed. In conclusion, Flexigrip clips offered a stable alternative to steel wires in primary, as well as secondary sternal closure. Moreover, in secondary sternal closure, the thermoactive clips offered safety advantages over the standard wire cerclage technique because the need for dissection of the substernal adhesions could be avoided.

99mTc-MIBI SPECT/CT SCINTIGRAPHY AND ULTRASOUND OF THE ANTERIOR NECK REGION IN DIAGNOSING PARATHYROID GLAND PATHOLOGY IN PATIENTS WITH THYROID NODULES.
Parathyroid scintigraphy with 99mTc-MIBI is an imaging technique used in nuclear medicine and performed in patients with suspected hyperparathyroidism (HPT). The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of this technique in patients who, along with suspected HPT, also have thyroid nodules. Retrospective analysis included a period of 8 years (2006-2013). ⋯ Seven (46%) patients had negative FNAC findings and PTH in the aspirate. The study showed scintigraphy to have high sensitivity (98%) in detecting patients with pathologic changes in the parathyroid glands. In patients with suspected HPT, scintigraphy needs to be combined with FNAC and PTH determination in the aspirate due to its low specificity of 28%.

FORAMEN OVALE AND FORAMEN ROTUNDUM: CHARACTERIZATION OF POSTNATAL DEVELOPMENT.
The sphenoid bone development occurs in both prenatal and postnatal periods. Sphenoid bone openings are used as surgical landmarks and are of great importance for neurosurgeons in everyday practice. The aim of this study was to identify morphological characteristics, postnatal development and remodeling, as well as clinical aspect of the sphenoid bone openings and to investigate their relationship and difference in size. ⋯ The most common shape of foramen ovale on both sides was oval, followed by the round, almond and elongated shapes. Modest to strong positive correlations between all foramina and age for the whole sample and both subsamples were presented, except for the right foramen rotundum area in the male subsample, which did not show significant correlation with age. Our study revealed changes in postnatal development and anatomy of foramen ovale and foramen rotundum, primarily in the aspects of size and shape, and should contribute to reducing the risk of damage to neurovascular structures during surgical procedures.
