The risk factors for surgical site infection (SSI) following urological operations have not been clearly identified, although the presence of a preoperative urinary tract infection (UTI) is thought to be one risk factor. We studied potential risk factors to clarify when and how bacteria contaminate wounds and SSI develop. ⋯ Preoperative UTI was the most important risk factor for SSI following urological operations. It is most likely that the bacteria in the urine contaminated the surgical fields and the AMP resistant strains produced SSI.

Squamous cell carcinoma in the renal pelvis of a horseshoe kidney.
We report a rare case of squamous cell carcinoma in the renal pelvis of a horseshoe kidney. An 80-year-old woman was referred to the National Nagano Hospital for the examination of occult blood in her urine. Microscopic hematuria was found, but pyuria was not seen. ⋯ We reviewed 24 cases of renal pelvic tumor in horseshoe kidneys previously reported in Japan. Seven cases (30%) included components of squamous cell carcinoma. The incidence is higher than that of renal pelvic tumors in the general population.

Penile fracture is a relatively rare condition. We report an unusual case of the bilateral disruption of the corpus cavernosum with complete urethral rupture resulting from blunt trauma during sexual intercourse. The subject underwent emergency surgery with preservation of erectile and voiding functions in the follow-up.

To use polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-microtiter plate hybridization assays to detect Mycoplasma genitalium, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma parvum (biovar 1) and Ureaplasma urealyticum (biovar 2) in first-voided urine specimens from patients with non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU). ⋯ This study shows the prevalence of mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas in NGU in Japan. M. genitalium and U. urealyticum (biovar 2) might be pathogens of NGU and could be associated with persistent and recurrent urethritis. When patients with NGU are treated, such pathogens should be taken into account. This PCR-microtiter plate hybridization assay provides a useful method for diagnosing NGU caused by M. genitalium and U. urealyticum (biovar 2).

Transrectal ultrasound-guided transperineal 14-core systematic biopsy detects apico-anterior cancer foci of T1c prostate cancer.
The optimal biopsy strategy for prostate cancer detection, especially in men with isolated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) elevation, remains to be defined. We evaluated diagnostic yield and safety of transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided transperineal systematic 14-core biopsy and compared the spatial distribution of cancer foci detected with this technique in men with and without abnormality on digital rectal examination (DRE). ⋯ TRUS-guided transperineal systematic 14-core biopsy showed an apico-anterior distribution of cancer foci in stage T1c prostate cancers.
