ReviewPrediction of institutionalisation in dementia. A systematic review.
In the past decades, a substantial number of studies considered factors influencing institutionalisation of persons with dementia. This study reviews recent work on predictors of actual institutionalisation in dementia. ⋯ The overview of research activities in this area showed a lack of methodological strength in a large part of identified studies. Nevertheless, a lot of well-examined and less highlighted predictors could be identified.

Comparative StudyCohort changes in cognitive function among Danish centenarians. A comparative study of 2 birth cohorts born in 1895 and 1905.
The objective was to examine cohort changes in cognitive function in 2 cohorts of centenarians born 10 years apart. ⋯ The increasing number of centenarians may not entail larger proportions of cognitively impaired individuals in this extreme age group.

Randomized Controlled TrialLong-term cognitive outcome of delirium in elderly hip surgery patients. A prospective matched controlled study over two and a half years.
To study the outcome of delirium in elderly hip surgery patients. ⋯ The risk of dementia or MCI at follow-up is almost doubled in elderly hip surgery patients with postoperative delirium compared with at-risk patients without delirium. Delirium may indicate underlying dementia.

High risk of cognitive and functional decline after postoperative delirium. A three-year prospective study.
The aim of the study was to investigate the association of postoperative delirium with the outcomes of cognitive impairment, functional disability and death. ⋯ The present study confirms a poor prognosis after delirium in elderly patients. The findings suggest that delirium does not simply persist for a certain time but also predicts a future cognitive decline with an increased risk of dementia.

This study aimed to develop a brief, reliable and valid test for cognitive function of severely demented patients. ⋯ The Severe Cognitive Impairment Rating Scale is a valid and reliable test for evaluating the cognitive function of advanced AD patients.
